| Hampstead Town Hall, 213 Haverstock Hill, London, London NW3 4PQ, United Kingdom Saturday 20-Feb-10 19:00 Phil Best playing improvised piano accompaniment to groundbreaking silent film This promises to be a rare treat for lovers of both beautiful piano playing and cinema history. The pianist Phil Best is a gifted improviser and welcomes this rare opportunity to improvise the piano accompaniment to 'Different From The Others', one of cinema's most ground-breaking films. Made in 1919 this German film is one of the first gay-themed films in the history of cinema. It was banned on its release and then later burned by the Nazis. Created by Magnus Hirschfeld and Richard Oswald, the film explores the criminalisation of gay men in Germany via the infamous paragraph 175 of the criminal code, and in spite of its difficult subject, it is ahead of its time in carrying a positive message in support of gay men. The showing of the film is part of an evening organised by the Camden LGBT Forum. The evening will begin with the screening of a new short film about homophobic and transphobic bullying made in partnership with the Queer Youth Network called 'Treading on Eggshells'.
