| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Sunday 26-May-13 07:00pm Following the success of the Prague première of Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart was immediately commissioned to write another opera. This time, Lorenzo Da Ponte chose the story of the Spanish nobleman Don Juan. The subject matter had been considered a crowd-puller for more than a century, due in particular to the spectacular demise of the hero. Don Giovanni invites the statue of the Commendatore, whom he has murdered, to dinner, and is swallowed up by the jaws of hell. However, the view of the hero had changed considerably since the Spanish dramatist and monk Tirso de Molina first brought the blasphemous deeds and just punishment of the villain to the stage in the 17th century. While de Molina was still entirely on the side of order, which is ultimately re-established through divine intervention, Mozart and Da Ponte turn the sexual braggart and seducer into a man whose unquenchable thirst for happiness calls into the question the very foundations of social coexistence. Don Giovanni thus becomes – involuntarily and perhaps even without realising it – a danger for the social order, which can be maintained only if it functions smoothly. In their comedy, which is shrouded in darkness throughout, Mozart and Da Ponte do not conceal the price that others have to pay for this kind of self-realisation. However, since they do not pass any final judgement and instead do justice to both sides, their work becomes a drama of humanity of indestructible power and relevance – a dramma giocoso that becomes all the more comic the more the tragic aspects behind the course of events become apparent.
The much-vaunted German director Sebastian Baumgarten will present his interpretation of Don Giovanni in Zurich. At the rostrum will be the young Robin Ticciati, a rising star among the new generation of conductors. Our Don Giovanni is the charismatic Peter Mattei, who is sought-after in this role from the Scala in Milan to the New York Met.In Italian with German and English surtitles.Robin Ticciati, Conductor Sebastian Baumgarten, Director Barbara Ehnes, Set Designer Marina Rebeka, Soprano: Donna Anna Julia Kleiter, Soprano: Donna Elvira Anna Gorbachyova, Soprano: Zerlina Peter Mattei, Baritone: Don Giovanni Pavol Breslik, Tenor: Don Ottavio Rafal Siwek, Bass: The Commendatore Ruben Drole, Baritone: Leporello Lukas Jakobski, Bass: Masetto

| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 27-Jun-13 07:00pm Following the success of the Prague première of Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart was immediately commissioned to write another opera.

CTO and the UCT Opera School continue their exploration of Mozart’s mature operas with a theatrically daring take on his thrilling Don Juan adaptation.
“640 Italians. 231 Germans. 100 French and 91 Turks. But in Spain – there are already 1003.”
With 2065 names in his little black book, Don Giovanni can lay fair claim to the title of the world’s greatest seducer. But one night in Seville, literature’s most famous sex addict goes too far – and must face supernatural retribution for his crimes.
Don Giovanni has inspired obsessive admiration ever since it was created – along with Hamlet and the sea, Flaubert believed it was one of “the three finest things God ever made” - and the greatest singers of every generation long to put their stamp on its memorable characters. Yet Mozart had a young cast in mind when he penned the opera – the first Giovanni was 21, and the first Donna Anna 24 – and Don Giovanni springs off the page with a visceral authenticity when performed by energetic twenty-somethings.
Kamal Khan and Matthew Wild return as conductor and director to create a new production of the opera, following their darkly illuminating Cosi fan tutte in 2012, “an entertaining production which unites sublime music with thought-provoking interpretation” (Cape Argus). “The Don propels himself through his last night on earth with manic abandon, compelling love, hate, lust and obsession from all who orbit around him,” says Wild. “No other opera explores sexual and romantic compulsion so arrestingly – themes we will foreground in a show that is young, raw and startling.”

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 22-Sep-13 06:00pm Don Giovanni – stylized by both his contemporaries and posterity in every nuance between admiration and condemnation: as a sensuous debaucher, an unfeeling cynic, a death-dealing demon, an egotist impelled by his urges, a sad angel or the proud embodiment of human self-realization.
This barely comprehensible hero plays with everyone around him and acts in accordance with just one rule: long live liberty! He seduces countless women, whose lives afterwards are never the same as they were before. He murders the father of one of his conquests, when the older man gets in his way: the painful collateral damage of a compulsive quest for whatever might promise vitality? Three women and two men join forces to pursue this man, who may have released different impulses in each one of them: thirst for vengeance, desire, curiosity for the unknown, the lust for subjugation or the altruistic desire to redeem him. The closer they get to him, the more his contours dissipate. The desire to unmask him becomes an obsession to punish and destroy him. This is finally carried out by a higher power, so that his pursuers keep running into one another. Lorenzo da Ponte converted the morality play about a “punished dissolute” into a libretto for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It was his music that gave the work a Janus-like countenance: a psychologically fine-tuned drama and concurrently a theatrical work that sets the final machinery of hell in motion. A dramma giocoso – a comical drama – and yet, first and foremost, a nocturnal play, in which the lust for life and the joy of life have to erupt, because death, solitude and emptiness wait on the other side.
