| Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 27-Jun-13 07:30pm The Birmingham Beethoven Cycle: Symphonies 8 & 9 It’s been an incredible journey, and on this night Andris Nelsons, the CBSO and our world-class Chorus arrive at Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony: the summit of any Beethoven cycle - and some say, the whole of classical music. But there’s a world of experience to live through before the CBSO get to that final, transcendent Ode To Joy, and Beethoven’s explosive little Eighth Symphony launches a concert that’s sure to be one of the most talked-about events in Birmingham this year. | Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, Nottingham NG1 5ND, United Kingdom Friday 28-Jun-13 07:30pm City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra The matchless combination of Andris Nelsons and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra provides all the elements for an astounding concert. And as it takes place at the end of June it’s appropriate to begin with Mendelssohn’s sun-drenched ‘Italian’ Symphony. A ten month tour of Italy in 1830 left him with an overwhelming impression of the ‘land of nature, delighting every heart,’ and inspired him to write his most effervescent symphony three years later.
One of the most moving stories of Beethoven is that one of the soloists at the premiere of his 9th Symphony in 1824 had to turn the deaf composer around so that he could witness the tumultuous applause. Few there could have doubted its seismic status. Visionary in scope, extreme in its gestures and technically daunting (horn players still have cold sweats about one notorious solo), it’s a piece which tears at the boundaries of the classical symphony, nowhere more so than in the choral finale that proclaims the words of Schiller’s Ode to Joy.Image credit: Andris Nelsons with the CBSO © Neil Pugh

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Tuesday 24-Sep-13 08:00pm Magnum Opus In the third concert of the residency of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Piano Concerto by Arnold Schoenberg, completed in Los Angeles in 1942, meets Beethoven’s magnum opus, his Ninth Symphony. The political link between the two works is obvious: the Ninth is a masterpiece with a variable reception history, and, not least during the Second World War, was misused for political purposes. Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto addresses the theme of the composer’s situation as an exile. Musically the colourful and expressive work is an example of how twelve-tone music need not be over-intellectual. It does though need high-calibre and intelligent performers: the young French pianist David Fray is precisely the man for the job.

officieuze volkslied van Europa. Franz Liszt (1811-1886) balde de hele Negende samen op één piano;
€ 21,00 / € 17,00 Stadspas / € 17,00 CJP Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827), Symphony no. 2 in D major, Op.36 (arr. for piano trio) Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827), Symphony no. 9 in D minor "Choral", Op.125 (arr. for piano solo (Liszt))
