| St Paul's Cathedral, London, London EC4M 8AD, United Kingdom Monday 8-Jul-13 08:00pm LSO and Tenebrae Renewing their stunningly successful artistic partnership, LSO and Tenebrae join forces for another specially conceived Festival highlight. The concert reflects the paradoxes of war and peace and celebrates the transformative power of words and music, opening with Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s exquisite elegy to Benjamin Britten. Britten’s own solo oboe work will be performed in various parts of the Cathedral, interwoven with Josquin’s Missa L'homme armé – one of the most uplifting and famous Renaissance settings of the Mass, based on a crusading ballad, the Armed Man, which was Mediaeval Europe’s most popular song. Then follows Strauss’ Metamorphosen, a profoundly moving response to the destruction of Munich in the Second World War; Samuel Barber’s most popular and expressive work, the Adagio, will be heard in a unique version approved by the composer’s estate for this one-off performance, bringing choir and orchestra together and giving the concert an unforgettable close.

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Sunday 15-Sep-13 06:00pm Adventurous Acoustic Journey Music for strings from four eras – that’s what the violinist Julia Fischer and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the specialist English orchestra for early music, are presenting. The spectrum from Bach to Schoenberg spans almost 200 years, but the relationship is no less plausible than that between Mozart’s B flat major Violin Concerto and the "Metamorphoses" of Richard Strauss: a musical weave that consists of seemingly endless variations and developments – an adventurous acoustic journey.

It was formed in 2007 by the Berlin professor of medicine Stefan Willich, who was appointed Rector of the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin in 2012; he has conducted the orchestra since its inception. Twice a year, doctors come from all over the world to rehearse and give concerts together. The outstanding standard of the orchestra is underscored by the fact that in Bonn two internationally celebrated solo singers are joining up with the orchestra: Jochen Kowalski, who ushered in the countertenor revival 30 years ago, and Donna Brown.

Image credit: Matthias Baus | ||
