| Peter Norton Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street, New York City 10025, United States Friday 12-Mar-10 17:00 Simply Schumann Featuring pianists Michael Boriskin, Tanya Bannister, Rorianne Schrade, Soyeon Lee, and Judith Gordon; mezzo-soprano Krista River; tenor Robert Swensen; soprano Sarah Wolfson; violinist Asmira Woodward-Page; violist Jennifer Stumm; and cellist Rhonda Rider. Schumann’s bicentennial is marked by this mini-marathon exploring the breadth of this quintessentially Romantic composer’s oeuvre, including some of the best-known works: Piano Quartet, Op. 47; Frauenliebe und leben; Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13; Lieder und Gesange aus Wilhelm Meister, Op. 98A; Carnaval, Op. 9; Fünf Stücke im Volkston, Op. 102; Marchenbilder, Op. 113; and more. An opening panel discussion with performers and music historians gives insight into the remarkably fertile yet troubled mind of this singular composer. | Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Friday 12-Mar-10 19:30 London Philharmonic Orchestra with Gunther Herbig Schumann’s unflinching adoration for his pianist wife Clara is the spark behind his Piano Concerto, a love-letter in music that offers a touching insight into one of the most famously passionate romances of the nineteenth century. But Schumann also took the young Johannes Brahms very much to heart, who he said would ‘spring like Minerva from the head of Jove’ to take the compositional world by storm. He was only partly right; Brahms’s First Symphony (heard on 11 December 2009) took him a painstaking fourteen years to write. But his Second did indeed spring forth like Minerva, flowing as seamlessly as a stream, abounding in pure, exhilarating joy. Tickets £9 - £38. | Barbican Centre, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 12-Mar-10 19:30 Emmanuel Ax and Dawn Upshaw More even than the Mazurkas and Polonaises – both Polish dance forms – Chopin's songs capture the essence of his affection for his homeland. All of them – and only 19 survive – set poetry by Polish writers, all of whom were Chopin's contemporaries. Not published by the composer, and only composed as and when he felt sufficiently inspired, they perhaps offer an intimate glimpse into his private thoughts. His Nocturnes, beautifully-crafted miniatures, are rightly among the most treasured pieces in the piano repertoire. That is a place undoubtedly held by Schumann's songs within the lieder repertoire. His skill for capturing the essence of a text, of instantly evoking the appropriate atmosphere – whether light-hearted or introspective – is almost unrivalled among Romantic composers. Osvaldo Golijov – the final composer in this series to write a work inspired by Chopin and Schumann – draws on eclectic musical and cultural references for inspiration, as well as on the voice of soprano Dawn Upshaw, who joins Emanuel Ax for this evening's concert. Golijov, Osvaldo (b. 1960), Other (New Work, UK Première) Schumann, Robert (1810-1856), Other (Selection of works for solo piano) Bach, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750), Other (Selection of works for solo piano) Emanuel Ax, Piano Dawn Upshaw, Soprano | ||

| Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Saturday 13-Mar-10 19:30 Philharmonia Orchestra conduted by Christoph von Dohnányi - 2 Both Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms needed the encouragement of Clara Schumann, an extraordinary pianist and Robert's wife, before writing their piano concertos. Brahms, shortly after Schumann's attempted suicide, wrote his first concerto as a tribute to Robert and to Clara. Depression plagued Schumann throughout his life yet his Second Symphony, written in the wake of a nervous breakdown, is a wonderfully powerful and sunny work. Schumann said to a friend that 'it was the resistance of the spirit that was at work here'. Philharmonia Orchestra Christoph von Dohnányi, Conductor Yefim Bronfman, Piano | ||

| Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, Verizon Hall, Philadelphia PA 19102, United States Saturday 20-Mar-10 20:00 Beethoven's Eroica Symphony Russian conductor Vladimir Jurowski returns for a second week on The Philadelphia Orchestra's 2009-10 season. He is joined by Benedetto Lupo, bronze medalist at the 1989 Van Cliburn Competition, who makes his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in the concerto Schumann composed for his wife, Clara, in the 1840s. The year 2010 marks the birth-bicentennial of Robert Schumann, whose powerful Romantic stamp on music has been felt ever since his untimely death in 1856. Maestro Jurowski maintains the tone of high drama with the Tragic Overture of Brahms-a composer the Schumanns discovered and promoted-and Beethoven's ruggedly defiant "Eroica" Symphony.
