| Colston Hall, Bristol BS1 5AR, United Kingdom Tuesday 9-Feb-10 19:30 Czech National Symphony Orchestra ‘Pesek shapes Dvorak’s melodies with great subtlety; his ability to achieve fine-grained orchestral phrasing is unrivalled’ insists International Record Review. With his own orchestra to hand and a programme positively dripping Dvorak, it’s time to find out what all the laudatory fuss is about. Two eminently noble symphonies (Schubert’s, alas ‘Unfinished’) frame a concerto whose dance-driven finale remembers the recently-written Slavonic Dances. To play it is a young British violinist (and collaborator with Bryan Adams and Vivienne Westwood), whose debut disc of Elgar and Grieg caused Classic FM Magazine to declare ‘Charlie Siem, a violinist who’s really going places’. The programme culminates with Liszt's towering B minor Sonata. QEH at 6.15pm, free pre-concert talk. Chopin at 200 - Celebrating a musical imagination. Huseyin Sermet, Piano | ||

| Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 11-Feb-10 14:15 Viennese Classics Light and shade in old Vienna. Schubert’s friends bet him that he couldn’t write an overture as good as one of Rossini’s, so he simply ran one off there and then! His sunny “little C major” symphony took rather more work, but you’d hardly know it; it positively bubbles with happiness - and, of course, those unforgettable Schubert melodies. It’s all a world away from Beethoven’s darkest and most powerful piano concerto - though you can certainly hear why Schubert hero-worshipped Beethoven above all his contemporaries. Expect conductor Andrew Manze, and hugely respected soloist Ronald Brautigam, to bring out all its drama and emotion. The quartet was resident at Sheffield’s Music in the Round as part of Ensemble 360 for four years, but is now concentrating fully on the string repertoire. For this recital the Elias Quartet is joined by Alice Neary for one of the great chamber works of the 19th century. Benjamin Britten’s youthful Divertimenti were originally composed as musical portraits of some of his school friends, as a suite entitled Go play, boy, play.
