‘I feel my creative power moving headlong. May it endure, Lord!' Debussy wrote in August 1915. He was staying near Dieppe in a villa from which he could gaze at ‘the expanse of the sea', and had recently finished his Sonata for cello and piano and was immersed in the composition of his piano Études and the Sonata for flute, viola and harp. This work, he said, reminded him ‘of a very antique Claude Debussy, he of the Nocturnes, or so it seems to me'. His choice of instruments gives the work a veil of melancholy, despite its incomparable charm and moments of restrained joy.
Bax wrote his Elegiac Trio in 1916, the year after Debussy's Sonata for the same instrumental combination but composed in quite different circumstances. Bax was an Irishman at heart and wrote this Trio in one movement after the Easter Rising and the execution of one of the Irish nationalist leaders, Padraig Pearse. However, this poignant music is not so much in memory of individuals as an elegy for Romantic Ireland, the evocation of a distant past.
Skaila Kanga's ingenious and sympathetic arrangement of Ravel's Sonatine for the same combination of instruments as Debussy's Sonata for flute, viola and harp was first performed in 1994.

They now focus entirely on the quartet repertoire, and have recently been selected as BBC New Generation Artists. Gramophone Magazine rates them as one of the top five young quartets, and recent reviews are glowing.

We are most grateful to him for generously giving his services for tonight’s recital. John McCabe is one of those rare musicians who is both composer and pianist of equal international standing. His pioneering mid-70s recording of the complete Haydn piano sonatas (still available on CD) was a revelation, and tonight’s fascinating programme links his beloved Haydn with Ravel, and Ravel with his own work, Tunstall Chimes, a piece inspired by the peal at a Kent church. Tonight’s companion study, Snowfall in Winter, was, according to the composer’s Lithuanian Diary, inspired by the name of an ice cream pudding....

| Anvil, Basingstoke, Basingstoke RG21 7QR, United Kingdom Wednesday 6-Oct-10 07:45pm London Mozart Players Ravel's evocation of the baroque glories of French history was a reaction to the destruction he saw in the First World War, and each of the six movements is dedicated to a victim of the war. Schumann's beautiful and underrated Cello Concerto disregards the notion of an heroic soloist pitted against the forces of the orchestra in favour of something much more collaborative and intimate. The Posthorn Serenade was written in 1779, perhaps for the end of the year ceremony of Salzburg University. The seven movements are contrasted in tempo and orchestration, ending with a presto finale which includes celebrtory flourishes from the posthorn. The London Mozart Players are Anvil Arts' Orchestra in Association. | ||

| Convent of Merciful Brothers, Brno, Vídeňská 7, Brno 63900, Czech Monday 11-Oct-10 07:30pm Concert of laureates of the Competition Concertino Praga This programme reflects the interest “serious” composers have shown in dance music. Contemporary musicians reflect the music of dance parties and discos, while composers of earlier ages absorbed the heritage of folk music, noble waltzes, gypsy parties, but also of jazz and swing dance halls. The concert will offer several insights, some serious others less so, on the influence dance music has had on the works of classical composers. And there is a nice surprise in the Schulhoff cycle, too. | ||

| Church of St John the Baptist, Little Missenden, Amersham, Amersham, United Kingdom Saturday 16-Oct-10 03:00pm Violin and cello Violin and cello duos are not common, but this combination of instruments produces lovely sonorities. This programme includes two of the genre’s classics, by Kodály and Ravel, together with solos for both instruments. Kodály’s warm, passionate and rhapsodic work reflects the composer’s love of folk music. Ravel’s is a complete contrast – cool, lean, elegant and sparkling with wit. Matthews and Causton have both featured at earlier Festivals. David Matthews wrote his piece for Gemma Rosefield, and Tamsin Waley-Cohen premiered Richard Causton’s Fantasia and Air at a Park Lane Group recital this year. “The world premiere of Richard Causton’s Fantastia and Air was full of vibrant colour and played with a strength of feeling and expression that characterised Waley-Cohen’s whole performance” (Catherine Nelson, The Strad) Gemma Rosefield delighted her Little Missenden audience in 2008. Now she’s teamed with a young violin virtuoso, Tamsin Waley-Cohen. “If you ever get the opportunity to hear cellist Gemma Rosefield, seize it” (Hampstead & Highgate Express) “There is no doubt that Tamsin Waley-Cohen is supremely talented. Her technical mastery is allied to superb musicianship and a luminous sound” (Musical Pointers) “Tamsin Waley-Cohen and Gemma Rosefield are still making their names separately. With outstanding panache and vigour, and sensitivity, they played as one” (Classical Source) | ||
