The idea of the Bachtrack Young Reviewers programme is to give young people aged between 12 and 16 years old the chance to attend a classical concert or opera, free of charge, and to write a review to be published on www.bachtrack.com. In this way, we hope to encourage more young people to go to classical music, and to provide a voice where the people who put on concerts can understand what appeals to a younger audience.
Here's what you have to do to take part in the programme:
- Identify a suitable adult to accompany you to the concert – most probably a parent or music teacher.
- Get the head of music at your school to agree that you are a suitable person to take part in the programme, and to conduct a short session with you to help you understand how to listen critically and write a review (your head of music can see what is expected of them at www.bachtrack.com/youngreviewer-notesforschools).
- Fill in the on-line form at www.bachtrack.com/youngreviewer-apply.
Here's what we will do when we receive your application:
- First, we will select reviewers from the applications we receive. We will select as many as we can, mainly on the basis of getting a good spread of ages and places across the country. If we receive far too many applications and have to disappoint you, we're sorry!
- If you are selected, we will contact your accompanying adult to make sure that they are happy with the arrangements, and wait until we have heard back from them.
- Next, we will try to find a suitable choice of concerts for you to attend, and we will write back to you and your accompanying adult with the details. Your accompanying adult will be expected to reply promptly to let us know which concert you can go to.
- Next, we will confirm the tickets with the venue, and write back to you to confirm that they have been safely reserved for you.
Now it's your turn:
- You need to spend a short session with your school's head of music or one of the other teachers in which they will give you some ideas on how to listen critically to a concert, and on the sorts of things that you might include in your review.
- Next the good bit: on the date of the concert, pick up your tickets from the box office and enjoy!
- And next the work: write your review, between 300 and 500 words. Get your music teacher to check it through, and then e-mail it to us. Remember to put your name on so we know who you are.
We'll then check over your review and make any corrections, and bring it live.
Congratulations – you're now a published music critic!
The small print: by sending your review to us, you agree to assign copyright to Bachtrack Ltd. This means that if anyone wants to make copies of the review or publish it on their own site, it's up to Bachtrack to give them permission.
