
Soundbox is a series of events inspired by the Academy’s museum and collections. Presented by Peter Sheppard Skærved, violinist and Viotti Lecturer, the events explore the historical and contemporary relationships between performers, composers, instruments and instrument-makers.

Award-winning pianist and professor of piano at Brandon University in Canada Megumi Masaki gives a lecture-recital, demonstrating how new music and visuals can combine in multimedia performance.

The Museum presents a new exhibition: ‘Re-thinking the Oboe: Developing an Instrument for the 21st Century’. Tracing the evolution of the oboe from the Baroque era to modern times, it culminates with the recently developed ‘Howarth-Redgate’ oboe. This opening event begins with an introductory talk and performances by Christopher Redgate of works written specifically to showcase the capabilities of the new instrument, by composers Richard Barrett, Sam Hayden and Dorothy Ker. The recital is followed by refreshments and an exhibition view.

'The Buffa Works of Donizetti - the man, the music and the modern day' - Joe Morgan (tenor)
Joe is performing in two of Donizetti's most well loved comic operas: L'Elisir d'Amore and Don Pasquale with the touring company, Pop-up-Opera. He will discuss the element of comedy in Opera and how Donizetti drew on the humorous theatrical traditions of Commedia Dell'Arte, leaving a lasting legacy for modern day touring Companies.

‘Puccini’s Big Three’ Lecture Series with Rosalind Coad (soprano)
6th, 13th and 20th March.
There is little doubt today that of all operatic music, Puccini’s is the most universally known; more people know the famous arias from La Boheme, Madame Butterfly and Turandot than any others, with the single possible exception of those from Carmen – a remarkable achievement considering Puccini’s early artistic struggles. This weekly lecture series will look at each of the “Big Three” in turn.
