The Hollywood Bowl’s annual “Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks” has become, along with Labor Day, something of a marker denoting the unofficial end of summer in Los Angeles. When bidding farewell to summer, one may as well do so with a bang—in this case both figuratively and literally. Tchaikovsky. Fireworks. A better way to fill up all the rows of seating at Hollywood Bowl has yet to be devised. The moment I walked into the Avery Fisher Hall on Monday night, a pervasive air of festivity was palpable – the players in the orchestra wore white jackets, lighting was colourful and the audience was chatty. Conductor Bramwell Tovey, in his ninth year hosting the New York Philharmonic’s “Summertime Classics” concert series, did his part to make the evening entertaining, with humorous commentary about the works in this all-Tchaikovsky programme that also shed light on signposts for better enjoyment.

I have to confess that an event like this is not within my normal musical radar. My music reviewing and listening is predominantly serious classical, and most of it is for a specialist part of that wide repertoire. So it was a slightly brave, or foolhardy, idea to offer to review one of these musical spectaculars at my local castle. The Battle Proms have been going since 1997 and run at six well-known country house venues during July and August.Read full review... | ||
