What happens when you sit two internationally acclaimed piano soloists down at one piano? In the case of ZOFO, the San Francisco based piano-four-hands ensemble, you get something energetically and electrifyingly out of this world. And when you throw five unique world premiere works into the mix, the resulting combination is even more impressive.

Before decking the halls of Davies Hall, however, they found time for another offering of classical excellence on Sunday afternoon with a superbly balanced program of chamber works by Harbison, Dohnányi and Brahms performed by members of the orchestra.

San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra in an evening of contemporary music
Image credit: San Francisco Composers Chamber OrchestraAs classical music ensembles strive to reach out to a broader audience, the search for different performing venues outside the traditional concert hall and church settings is a common goal among many. However, the 43 year-old concert series at Old First Concerts continues to present its successfully diverse array of concerts under the same roof: the Old First Presbyterian Church in San Francisco.

Music@Menlo: An impassioned chamber performance
Image credit: David Finckel and Wu Han © Christian SteinerThe seventh of the Concert Programs at the annual Music@Menlo summer chamber music festival was entitled “Impassioned.” The beautifully comprehensive and informative program books offered an accompanying image of the Eiffel Tower during an electrical storm, forks of lightning breaking over the ominous Parisian skyline, alluding to the “visceral emotions” that were to come from tonight’s performance. With a strong lineup of works by Schumann, Fauré and Dvořák in store, I left the calming sunny skies of Atherton outside and prepared myself for the storm of music to come.

Eliot Fisk and Richard Stoltzman: Food for Thought
Image credit: Eliot Fisk © Jesse Weiner and Richard Stoltzman © Lisa Marie MazzucoAs I sat in Herbst Theater last night awaiting the appearance of clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and guitarist Eliot Fisk, my mind wandered to the analogy of food and wine. With an abundance of delectable cuisine and fine wine across the world, the combination of such pairings are endless. However, the choice requires special consideration, and can be the difference between a superb dining experience and an unsatisfactory one. Having never experienced such a unique program as that presented Saturday night by Chamber Music San Francisco, I wondered if this would prove to be a successful pairing.

He has appeared with every major orchestra throughout the world, is the recipient of four Emmy awards, has collaborated with composer John Williams as violin soloist in Steven Spielberg’s Schinder’s List and featured at the inauguration of President Barack Obama along with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and clarinetist Anthony McGill. This is merely the tip of the iceberg and yet he continues to add to his increasingly impressive career.
