| 30-May-2012 Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church | A Little Nightmare Music: Igudesman and Joo |
Aleksey Igudesman (violin) and Hyung-ki Joo (piano) walked onto the stage at St. George’s Anglican Church in Montreal with an aura of severity. The pianist was dressed in tails and the violinist was dressed in a formal white dress shirt and dress pants: nothing you wouldn’t expect from the usual suspects of classical music performers. The two had no smiles on their faces and their demeanors seemed to say to the audience: “You will now hear a very serious performance of very serious music”.Read full review...
| 28-May-2012 Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church | Strong yet Soft: The Versatile James Ehnes |
Violin virtuoso James Ehnes gave a concert of works by Béla Bartók on May 28th at the Montreal Chamber Music Festival. | 23-Feb-2012 Trinity St Paul's Centre | Virtuoso Vivaldi: Tafelmusik with Marion Verbruggen |
Some of the instruments that the members of Tafelmusik play on may sometimes be considered the dinosaurs of the string-instrument family. Nevertheless, the members of this internationally lauded Baroque orchestra have a knack for delivering fresh and lively performances, presenting the Baroque and Classical repertoire in such an invigorating way that it feels as current as a Justin Bieber hit. The musicians are always energized on stage, and delight in provoking each other into musical banter and competition.Read full review...
| 13-Feb-2012 Walter Hall, University of Toronto | No Holds Barred: The St. Lawrence String Quartet at Walter Hall |
Never hold back – this would serve well as a motto for the St. Lawrence String Quartet. The quartet has been concertizing for over two decades and has seen two member changes, but the intensity and bravery with which they approach music-making has not waned in the slightest. Their brand of performing is not for the faint of heart, and their performance at the University of Toronto’s Walter Hall on February 13th was no exception, to the delight of this reviewer.

| 19-Jan-2012 St Lawrence Centre For The Arts: Jane Mallett Theatre | Celebrating 25 Years of the Lafayette String Quartet |
The string quartet is a peculiar beast in the classical music world. It takes a dash of talent, a sprinkling of luck, and a lot of social skills to make it in a professional, full-time string quartet. Many quartets are plagued with internal conflicts and member changes; however, the Lafayette Quartet seems to have defied the statistics in this category, almost miraculously. The four women who took the stage the evening of January 19th at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto are the same four women who founded the group 25 years ago.Read full review...
