The world's best way to find live classical music
Mahler's music - a selection
With Mahler's birthday coming up, we've chosen a few clips from Youtube to give you a good feel for his music. The symphonies are first, followed by some ecstatically wonderful performances of his songs, and then a real surprise. But beware: in the words of one YouTube commentator: "Never try to listen to Kindertotenlieder [songs on the death of a child] sang by Kathleen Ferrier while you are driving your car: you may never cross the bridge..."
Symphony no. 5 in C sharp minor: 1st movement "Trauermarsch"
conducted by Leonard Bernstein. Music starts at around 1:02.
Symphony no. 5 in C sharp minor: 4th movement "Adagietto"
conducted by Herbert von Karajan
Symphony no. 8 "Symphony of a Thousand"
conducted by Bernard Haitink in his farewell concert with the Concertgebouw. Music starts at around 2:03.
Symphony no. 3: 1st movement
conducted by Valery Gergiev
Symphony no.3: 4th Movement
conducted by Leonard Bernstein, with Christa Ludwig and the Vienna Boys Choir
Rückertlieder: "Liebst Du Um Schönheit"
sung by Yvonne Minton
Liebst du um Schönheit,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe die Sonne,
Sie trägt ein gold'nes Haar!

Liebst du um Jugend,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe den Frühling,
Der jung ist jedes Jahr!

Liebst du um Schätze,
O nicht mich liebe.
Liebe die Meerfrau,
[Die]1 hat viel Perlen klar.

Liebst du um Liebe,
O ja, mich liebe!
Liebe mich immer,
Dich lieb' ich immerdar.
If you love for beauty,
Oh, do not love me!
Love the sun,
She has golden hair!

If you love for youth,
Oh, do not love me!
Love the spring;
It is young every year!

If you love for treasure,
Oh, do not love me!
Love the mermaid;
She has many clear pearls!

If you love for love,
Oh yes, do love me!
Love me ever,
I'll love you evermore!
Kindertotenlieder: "Nun will die Sonn' so hell aufgeh'n"
sung by Kathleen Ferrier - not a new recording, but sung with almost unbearable intensity. To be heard only when you're feeling strong.
Nun will die Sonn' so hell aufgeh'n

Now the sun wants to rise as brightly

as if nothing terrible had happened during the night.

The misfortune had happened only to me,

but the sun shines equally on everyone.

You must not enfold the night in you.

You must sink it in eternal light.

A little star went out in my tent!

Greetings to the joyful light of the world.
Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen: "Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht"
sung by Hermann Prey
Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht,
Fröhliche Hochzeit macht,
Hab' ich meinen traurigen Tag!
Geh' ich in mein Kämmerlein,
Dunkles Kämmerlein,
Weine, wein' um meinen Schatz,
Um meinen lieben Schatz!
Blümlein blau! Verdorre nicht!
Vöglein süß!
Du singst auf grüner Heide.
Ach, wie ist die Welt so schön!
Ziküth! Ziküth!
Singet nicht! Blühet nicht!
Lenz ist ja vorbei!
Alles Singen ist nun aus!
Des Abends, wenn ich schlafen geh',
Denk'ich an mein Leide!
An mein Leide!
When my darling has her wedding-day,
her joyous wedding-day,
I will have my day of mourning!
I will go to my little room,
my dark little room,
and weep, weep for my darling,
for my dear darling!
Blue flower! Do not wither!
Sweet little bird
you sing on the green heath!
Alas, how can the world be so fair?
Chirp! Chirp!
Do not sing; do not bloom!
Spring is over.
All singing must now be done.
At night when I go to sleep,
I think of my sorrow,
of my sorrow!
And finally, the most unlikely number: Symphony no. 5 in C sharp minor; 1st movement "Trauermarsch"
played on a piano roll by Gustav Mahler himself.
