Do you know that for just £5 per person, you can go to an amazing Proms concerts AND get a free workshop beforehand for your family?
Anyone who had a quick look through the BBC Proms programme might not have noticed the wonderful events the BBC are putting on for children, but here is the low down....
Before seven of the Proms there will be special events aimed at children from age 7 plus, and these events are FREE to ticket holders of the main Prom. Anyone with Proms tickets can go along to these introductions as long as they have their “entry ticket” of at least one under 16 year old in their party!
Family Music Intro pre-concert workshops introduce the concert's music in an interactive and fun way. Bring along an instrument if you want to play along with the workshop musicians, or just sit back and watch! Either way, you'll get a taster of the works you'll hear later on in the main evening Prom by playing or hearing some of the music.

Thursday, August 7th , 17.45 – 18.30, (Prom 19.30 – 21.45): Get a sneak preview of what's going to be played in tonight's Prom, and learn the stories behind the music. Bring your instrument for a chance to take part!
Saturday, August 9th, 17.15 – 18.00 (Prom 19.00 – 21.00): Join some of the sensational young musicians from the National Youth Orchestra to discover the sound-worlds of Varèse, Rachmaninov and Copland. Bring your instrument and join in.
Saturday, August 23rd, 16.45 – 17.30 (Prom 18.30 – 20.45): Join some of the sensational young musicians from the National Youth Orchestra to discover the sound-worlds of Varèse, Rachmaninov and Copland. Bring your instrument and join in.
Wednesday August 27th, 17.15 – 18.00 (Prom 19.00 - 21.05): Bring your family to hear an introduction to the stories behind tonight's music. Bring your instrument along and take part alongside members of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Sunday, August 31st, 14.15 – 15.00 (Prom 16.00 – 17.30): Discover the incredible world of the piano - its many styles, sounds and techniques - in this special Music Intro event dedicated to this dazzlingly versatile instrument.
Monday, September 1st, 17.15 – 18.00 (Prom 19.00 – 21.40): Bring your instrument along for a chance to join members of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and discover more about tonight's music.
Wednesday September 3rd, 17.30 -18.30 (Prom 19.30 – 21.40): Find out more about Brahms and Shostakovich with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, plus a look at the orchestra's education programme and a showcase of a recent project on Brahms.
Where do the workshops take place?
They will all take place at the Royal College of Music, at the Britten Theatre which is just a few minutes walk from the Royal Albert Hall where the Proms take place.
When do I show up?
If you want to buy tickets in advance for the BBC Proms, remember they are half price for under 16s. You can buy them from either BBC Proms, online, or from the Royal Albert Hall.
OR
There are about 900 “promenade” tickets costing £5 each which are not issued until the day of each performance as they are standing tickets for the arena and gallery. If you want to go to a Family Introduction then a concert, this is what you do: Get into the promenade queue by mid-afternoon, and take everything you need for the workshop and the concert. You won't be going home inbetween! The Royal Albert Hall staff will tell you how to keep your place in the queue AND attend the Family Music Introduction workshop.
So give it a go. Every Londoner remembers their first Promenade concert. Let your kids find out for themselves how special it is!
