We all have something in common; we love to be scared. But we like to be scared in a safe environment. Especially kids. That’s what makes the PhilharMonster concert such a joy for families with children age 3 to 12. We blend equal parts spookiness, musicality and sheer fun to present the area’s best Halloween performance event. Even the Orchestra gets into the act, bedecked in their scary Halloween finery. Neal’s dramatic entrances always get raves from the little ones. Preconcert activities include a costume contest, so check the website in early October for categories and rules.

What could a funny-looking gnome, an old Italian castle, and a ballet of baby chicks possibly have in common? They’re all famous pictures turned into music by Modest Mussorgsky! More than 100 years ago, the famous Russian composer created Pictures at an Exhibition, inspired by paintings and drawings by one of his dearest friends. Now, the VSO helps you re-create these pictures in your imagination by playing excerpts of Mussorgsky’s work arranged for orchestra. Don’t miss this unique concert experience that will have everyone in the family “seeing” music through the mind’s eye.

What happens when a clown takes the stage and battles the conductor for control of the orchestra? Nothing short of a symphonic showdown set to the usually serious sounds of Beethoven, Grieg, Britten and Stavinsky. By the time it's over, the mime conducts, the conductor becomes the mime, and even the musicians get into the act as Dan Kamin draws everyone into this merry Comedy Concerto.

Experience all those famous fairy tales told in music, featuring Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, a scene from Prokofiev's Cinderella, and Bruce Adolphe's unique version of Little Red Riding Hood (beloved by wolf fans, children, and pediatricians)!
