| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Tuesday 12-Nov-13 08:15pm Hels and Hemels (Diabolical and Celestial) Composed in 1673 Battalia is one of the most remarkable works of the seventeenth century. Scored for ten musicians, Biber’s evocative work depicts the tale of a group of soldiers: one hears them sitting by the campfire, getting drunk, fighting on the battlefield and commemorating the fallen with a prayer. The tempestuous C.P.E. Bach is well represented by his Cello Concerto in A. The English master cellist Steven Isserlis, who last performed with Amsterdam Sinfonietta ten years ago, returns as soloist, not only in this tumultuous concerto but also in Bloch’s lamenting, Jewish miniatures.
Honneger drew inspiration from Bach and the violence of the Second World War as he composed his darkly ominous Second Symphony. Peace is once again restored by Beethoven. After a protracted illness Beethoven astonished everyone with his unexpected recovery. Convinced that 'the highest authority' had spared his life, Beethoven wrote a prayer of thanksgiving to express his gratitude; music that ascends to the heavens.Image credit: Marco Borggreve Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827), String Quartet no. 15 in A minor, Op.132 (Heiliger Dankgesang)

| International House of Music, Moscow, naberezhnaya Kosmodamianskaya, д. 52 стр. 8, Moscow 115054, Russia Monday 9-Dec-13 07:00pm Nino Gvetadze Schoenberg once described Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) as ‘a depiction of the night and an expression of human feelings.’ Upon hearing the music Gustav Mahler immediately declared it a work of genius. In this unique masterpiece Schoenberg fully exploits every facet of the string orchestra. Reason aplenty for Amsterdam Sinfonietta to adopt Verklärte Nacht as one of its favourite showpieces. The CD recording of the work was awarded the French Opus d’or prize, among others. In collaboration with the Cheltenham Festival and other institutions Amsterdam Sinfonietta has commissioned the English composer David Matthews to write a double concerto for violin and viola.
The talented Georgian pianist Nino Gvetadze makes her first appearance with the ensemble with a piano concerto of Mendelssohn. She made her name in the Netherlands after winning three prizes at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition, followed by the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Award. Her poetic playing has received high acclaim.Image credit: Marco Borggreve
