| Stadsgehoorzaal, Leiden, Breestraat 60, Leiden 2311 CS, Netherlands Saturday 18-May-13 02:15pm Wibi Soerjadi soloist in Chopin After last season’s sublime performance, Wibi Soerjadi absolutely had to come back to The Hague. The Dutch pianist has played in all the world’s great concert halls, including Vienna’s Musikverein and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He’ll play with the Residentie Orkest/The Hague Philharmonic in Chopin’s First Piano Concerto, a masterwork that gives the pianist every opportunity to show off what he or she can do, just as Chopin himself did when he wowed Warsaw with the piece in 1830. The concert will close with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, one of the most beloved in the symphonic repertoire, conducted by a favourite with audiences, Santtu-Matias Rouvali. | ||

![]() | ||
| Stadthalle, Göttingen, 37073 Göttingen, Germany Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm Galaconcert: Sandrine Piau The programme of this year’s Gala Concert
tells of the beauty of the Orient and of its
darker sides. “Queen of the Baroque”
French vocalist Sandrine Piau made her
name as one of the top interpreters of
music from Lully to Handel, working with
conductors such as Jacobs, Christie, Herreweghe
and Rousset. In arias from Giulio
Cesare and Alexander Balus, the Gala
audience witnesses her as the Egyptian
ruler Cleopatra, around whose dramatic
love affairs countless tales have been spun.
With Johann Joseph Fux’ splendidly colourful
Turcaria, the FestspielOrchester
Göttingen takes us into the fray: we find
ourselves in the midst of the Turkish siege
of Vienna in 1683. And by alternating Sephardic
Jewish folk music with Baroque
works, the Ensemble NAYA spans a musical
bridge that links the Orient with the
Occident. Handel, George Frideric (1685-1759), Alexander Balus, HWV 65: Hark! Hark! He strikes the Golden Lyre

| Cadogan Hall, London, 5 Sloane Terrace, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm Mozart Classics An essential concert for Mozart lovers, boasting two of his most scintillating masterpieces. Mozart’s ‘Great’ G minor Symphony, No.40, was his penultimate work in the genre, written when the composer was at the peak of his powers. After its unmistakeable opening bars, full of intrigue and mystery, the Symphony unfolds into music ranging from elegant lyricism to profound drama. Despite the fact that not all of Mozart’s Requiem was completed by Mozart himself, the sheer brilliance of the music makes this one of his most powerful and enduring works. | ||

| De Bijloke Muziekcentrum, Ghent, Ghent, Belgium Saturday 18-May-13 08:00pm Brussels Philharmonic It took some time before Mahler dared to name one of his symphonic poems the First Symphony. Perhaps it precisely for that reason that the work already contains everything that marks the eccentric composer: the rich variations, the intensive life melody, the important role of nature and of course thoughts of death. The heroic end allows the orchestra to burst its bounds – and leaves the audience with an indelible impression. | ||

| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Saturday 18-May-13 08:00pm Janowski conducts Brahms and Schumann Two giants of the Romantic era grace the program. Schumann proudly called his overture “one of the strongest of my musical children.” His electrifying Fourth Symphony (it actually predated two of his others) was a birthday present to his young wife Clara. Brahms made the unusual concerto pairing of violin and cello partly to mend a break in his friendship with a virtuoso violinist. The instruments’ pronounced difference in sound resulted in a dramatic, Gypsy-flavored work. | ||

You are there when the DPO Chorus and full Orchestra reveal Johannes Brahms' deepest meditation on the nature of life and eternity.
