| Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 20-Jun-13 07:30pm Flowers and Fables Sibelius took the classical symphony and charged it with the freshness and energy of nature itself. Lutoslawski, meanwhile, launched brilliant musical fireworks into the grey skies of postwar Poland. Edward Gardner loves them both, and he begins and ends this concert with two of the twentieth century’s most original – and inspiring – symphonies. In between, something magical happens, as soprano Lucy Crowe re-tells Sibelius’s primal northern myth - and proves that Lutoslawski’s enchanted nursery rhymes aren’t just for children. (£10-£42) | ||

| Sanssouci Palace: Court of Honour, Potsdam, Potsdam, Germany Sunday 23-Jun-13 09:00pm Scandinavian Last Night This week midsummer night is celebrated everywhere in the North and each country has its very own customs. In Denmark and Norway the summer solstice festivities were connected to John the Baptist’s saint’s day, so celebrations commence tonight into "St. Hans Eve". Lighting huge bonfires to scare away evil spirits is always an important part, then there is the traditional "fire speech", which takes a satirical look at day-to-day affairs. In Denmark they even place a straw witch on top of the fire and send her back to Mount Brocken in the Harz Mountains in Germany – German craftsmen are reported to have brought this custom to the country a long time ago. A night of miracles and legends – perfect for entering musical fairy-tale worlds where Shakespeare’s elves, Nordic trolls and characters from Arabian nights gather …

Then virtuosic Swedish clarinetist Emil Jonason will make his American debut performing Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto. British composer Anna Clyne returns this season with her most ambitious work to date. A powerful 20-minute piece recently premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Night Ferry came from her exploration of Schubert, who suffered from a form of manic depression characterized by severe mood swings. Clyne writes, “Night Ferry is music of voyages, from stormy darkness to enchanted worlds.” And anyone who has heard Clyne’s work will surely not miss this journey.
