| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Friday 10-Oct-08 Berliner Philharmoniker Connoisseurs have been in the know for a while: when Trevor Pinnock steps up to the rostrum he is at best holding scores that are about 250 years old, music from Viennese Classicism. Pinnock justifiably made a name for himself as an expert for music from this time. His interpretations, especially of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music are fine, dense, structured and sharp. And this is why Mozart fans can look forward to Pinnock’s guest conductorship with the Berliner Philharmoniker, and of course to the works themselves: both of the master’s G Minor symphonies. This utterly delightful combination provides enlightening comparisons between Mozart’s late and early styles. In their midst lies a work, which is not only one of the most beautiful of its kind, but also known for controversy about its name: with the question whether the piano concerto K.271 is really called Jeunehomme or rather Jenamy. Our recommendation is that you choose the name you prefer and enjoy the interpretation of the Berliner Philharmoniker under Trevor Pinnock with the soloist Maria João Pires. Connoisseurs know: she is one of the best contemporary performers of Mozart... | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 8-Nov-08 Brahms PC1 and sym 2/ Vogt - Rattle Johannes Brahms’ path to the symphony was arduous and took a circuitous route. Unsatisfied with his work on a symphony, he discarded it, instead incorporating material from it into his First Piano Concert which premiered in Hanover in 1859. Two years later the composer titled his orchestral work composed of a number of movements Serenade op. 11, out of fear of comparison with one of the greatest symphonists of all time. “Oh God, if one dares to write symphonies after Beethoven, they must be absolutely different!”, Brahms exclaimed. It was only with the overwhelming success of his First Symphony, premiered in November 1876, that Brahms overcame his “symphony scruples” – as Robert Schumann once called them. Just six months later he began working on his Second Symphony. And it came easy to him: after having spent no less than twelve years brooding over his contemplative First Sym-phony, Brahms composed his distinctly cheerful Second within months. Brahms explained the predominantly pastoral character of the Second Symphony with reference to the idyllic at-mosphere he encountered working at the Wörthersee: “so many melodies flying around here that you must be careful not to tread on any...” | ||

![]() | ||
| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Friday 18-Jan-13 08:00pm Berliner Philharmoniker, Murray Perahia Joined by the mime Dimitri and his company, members of the Berliner Philharmoniker will present a staged performance of Igor Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale for narrator, two actors, a dancer and seven musicians. In this family concert, the Chamber Music Hall will be turned into the setting for a bargain played out between the Soldier and the Devil who, in exchange for the Soldier’s violin, offers him a magic book with which to make his fortune. Without his fiddle, however, the Soldier’s new-found wealth brings him no joy. He longs to undo the exchange, but that isn’t so easy when you’re dealing with the Devil. A hair-raising journey ensues, at the end of which nothing is left as it was before. Schubert, Franz (1797-1828), Sonata in C major for 4 hands, "Grand Duo" D.812 (orch. Joseph Joachim) | ||
