| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Violin Concertos This concert completes our week of Bach as we present all of his violin concertos. There are six of them that feature one, two or three violins as soloists and we have a star-studded cast of musicians to perform them for you. The great American violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to the Festival as soloist and leader of the ensemble. She’ll be joined by violinists Elizabeth Wallfisch and Timmy Chooi and OSM Principal Oboe Ted Baskin. The ensemble will be made up of the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 competition. A world-class evening in store for you!
The Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been seen on the same stage at the same time, until now.Rachel Barton Pine, Violin Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Marie-Ève Poupart, Violin Matilda Kaul, Violin Boson Mo, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Emily Westell, Violin Marcus Thompson, Viola Lambert Chen, Viola Emmanuel Vukovich, Viola Arnold Choi, Cello Rachel Desoer, Cello Ariel Barnes, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass Theodore Baskin, Oboe

Beethoven’s Piano Sonata is one of the most profound spiritual pieces ever composed. From the first downbeat, Chaminade’s Flute Concertino is instantly recognizable for its incredible beauty. These pieces are joined by two gorgeous twentieth century compositions that epitomize the interplay and complicated teamwork that is the hallmark of great chamber music.

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 7-Jun-13 08:00pm Move to the Music Dance and music make perfect bedfellows, and while none of this program's pieces have been choreographed, they all find inspiration in dance forms. Playful with a hint of the ironic, Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik is only "little" in name. Its dance-like rhythms include a fun waltz and a melody worthy of imbibing at Oktoberfest. We usually hear Rachmaninoff's Morceaux de salon for piano, but this set of dance forms is perfect for chamber instruments. An early work, Dvořák's Sextet is replete with folk idioms and dances from his native Czechoslovakia that are a whirlwind of virtuosity. Chamber pieces performed by three of the best student ensembles of the week are sure to move you. | ||

| Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 04:00pm Angels in Blythburgh Jonathan Harvey’s choral music is distinguished by an often ecstatic lyricism and a serene spirituality, where the purity of the human voice contrasts with
startling vocal explorations stretching the possibilities of choral sound to its very boundaries. This is astonishing music of multi-layered intricacy that exerts
a direct emotional pull, alluding to other music and cultures, other centuries, yet speaking with one voice, seemingly timeless and yet recognisably of today.
The Latvian Radio Choir’s recent rapturously-received recording demonstrated their virtuosity and affinity with this music. Here they tellingly pair Harvey
with Tudor anthems – a set of celebratory hymns and psalms and devotional prayers that contain some of the highpoints of English sacred repertoire. ‘No British choir sings with the precision and vibrato-free purity of this brilliant group from Riga’ - The Independent

| Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 13-Jun-13 04:30pm Songs of Amour Song is always beautiful whether with or without words. Tower's vibrant work Rising is a lovely blend of tones and color. Comprised of a string quartet plus flute, this unique ensemble has memories of Dvořák in its resplendent rise. It is joined by one of the last works of the great composer Max Bruch. You'll love hearing three of his set of eight pieces for clarinet, viola, and piano. These instruments exude warmth and splendor, and the three selections are simply gorgeous. The concert takes a turn to the many colors of love when words join the song. Cabaret is a rich tradition in which many classical composers have dabbled. You'll be caught in a romantic swoon and sway to these often jazz-infused melodies. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm A Musical Melange This blend of Italian, French, and Russian music with a sprinkling of strings, piano and woodwinds results in a melodic and colorful feast. A pinch of Bach permeates Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, a work of stark emotional power. Poulenc’s jazzy sextet, described as “very fast and fiery” by the composer himself, is infectiously delectable. The chance to hear the only surviving chamber work by opera composer Giuseppe Verdi is a delicious treat. This magnificent masterpiece will make you wish Verdi had written more instrumental music. And for dessert, enjoy two surprises from the best student ensembles of the week. | ||

The king’s brother travelling as ambassador between Stockholm and Kassel brings Johan Joachim Agrell from Uppsala to Germany where the composer lives and works for forty years. The Saxon Johann Adolph Scheibe in turn is recommended by his employer to the Queen of Denmark who happens to be his sister and becomes an influential co-creator of musical life in Copenhagen. And Telemann, musical director of Hamburg, wittily portrays Swedes, Danes and Germans in his suite – after all the second largest Danish city is right at his doorstep – Hamburg Altona. Their music speaks a language that is understood everywhere because it joyfully absorbs the best of all nations.

These six musicians living in Berlin represent Romania, Israel, Venezuela, Germany, USA and Turkey. Widely recognized as one of the most prominent ensemble pianists of our times, Zeynep Özsuca had cooperated with various artists including Magdalena Kožená, Rolando Villazon, Simon Rattle and Gustavo Dudamel. A promising flute player of his generation Aaron Dan was the winner of Belgrade International Flute Competition in 2005. And Yigal Kaminka is a musician whose mastery of contemporary oboe is matched by his virtuosity in baroque oboe and block flute. Sascha Rattle is a musician who drew a great attention since the first time he performed with Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist in 2009. Performed in numerous concerts in North and South America, Russia, Europe and the Middle East both as a soloist and a chamber music artist, Heidi Elizabeth Mockert is a bassoon player invited by several important chamber music ensembles. In addition to all prominent orchestras in Hungary, French horn player Dániel Molnár also performs in several important orchestras in Europe, including Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. | Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 21-Jun-13 08:00pm Fall in Love Love in all its forms and complexity is the subject of this concert. You’ll fall in love all over again with Mozart through his mischievous string quintet, suffused with a blend of cheer and vigor with deeper, more serious emotions. Intimate and cozy, this work’s soft beauty is compelling.Harbison turns to familial love in Songs America Loves to Sing. | United Methodist Church, San Luis Obispo, CA, 1515 Fredericks St, San Luis Obispo, 93405, United States Monday 22-Jul-13 07:30pm Chamber Series: Born from Struggle Many great works of art are born from tragedy, strife and struggle. These three pieces, written in different parts of the world in different time periods, represent the struggles each composer faced. In 1915 France was in the midst of WW I, and Debussy struggled with the cancer that would take his life. In addition to Napolean's invasion of Vienna and his deteriorating relationships with family, Beethoven also had to contend with deafness while writing Op. 95, one of his most celebrated quartets. And the String Quartet No. 6 was the last piece of music Bartok write in his native Hungary, having to flee the Nazis in WW II.

Rosa by James Rolfe and Camyar Chai Isabelle has fled from her home and husband after the death of their child. Hector finds her in a brothel, where she has retreated in order to forget, and desperately urges her to return. Slip – excerpts by Juliet Palmer and Anna Chatterton Slip was created as a site-specific performance for the Harrison Baths, Toronto’s only public bathing complex. Connecting to homelessness, the piece also explores how we are bound together by the intimate experience of cleansing and our precious connection to water and how women experience interaction in intimate spaces. Cake by Monica Pearce. This twelve-minute comedic opera premiered in January 2012 at the Toy Piano Composers’ Opera Scenesters concert. A bride-to-be barely navigates her family’s relationships and expectations as she attempts to order the perfect cake for her wedding. The Bicycle Opera Project brings Canadian contemporary opera to communities across Ontario by bicycle! We bring Canadian music to people who might otherwise have little opportunity to hear it, and work to close the distance between audiences and opera singers through performance in intimate spaces. The project focuses on operatic repertoire that deals with contemporary issues relevant to all audiences. Our scenes are sung in English (with one in French) so that audiences can more readily relate to the material. Featuring Larissa Koniuk, soprano, Michelle Simmons, mezzo, Geoffrey Sirret, Baritione, Will Reid, Tenor, Wesley Shen, Music Director, piano, Katherine Watson, flute & Leslie Ting, violin. Michael Mori, Stage Director, Alex Samaras, Associate Producer, & Composer in Residence Adam Scime. In July 2013, we will be cycling west of Toronto to Hamilton, Elora, Fergus, Kitchener, Waterloo, Bayfield, London and Stratford! Demythologizing the idea of “the opera singer” (we get dirty too!) and operatic traditions (who says we can’t cycle?), and providing a car-free alternative to touring. Little Miss All Canadian by Lemit Beecher and Liza Balkan A miniature opera that was written at this year’s Composer-Librettist Laboratory (LibLab) at Tapestry. Two mothers hilariously coach their daughters from the sidelines of a beauty pageant while they discover a disturbing article in the paper: an eleven-year-old girl’s dismembered body parts have been discovered in a park. The Enslavement and Liberation of Oksana G.by Aaron Gervais and Colleen Murphy This scene served as the genesis for the larger work but does not exist in the full-scale opera. A woman from Eastern Europe had been forced into prostitution, but manages to escape to Italy. She finds herself at a safe house run by a priest and has begun the process of recovery. One night, she enters the priest's room to look out the window at the moon. He wakes up and they begin discussing her situation, the possibility of returning home, and their relationship. Trahisons liquides - excerpt by Stacey Brown & Sébastien Harrisson Set on the Hibernia oil platform located off the east coast of Newfoundland, Pierre, a neurologist is conducting research on the reactions of the human brain under water. Nora, a deep-sea welder, is one of Pierre’s research subjects and the two become romantically involved. Nora encounters the spirit of a long dead pilot, who mistakes her for her past lover, and Pierre manipulates his authority to keep Nora close.
