Handel based his work on the libretto by the famous poet Pietro Metastasio. In its first season Siroe was performed on 18 successive evenings, but it was never subsequently revived in Handel’s lifetime. The opera now receives its first performance in Göttingen with a top-rank cast performing under the musical direction of Laurence Cummings. | The London Coliseum, St. Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4ES, United Kingdom Friday 14-Jun-13 07:30pm Two unspoken themes run throughout Britten’s much-admired opera: the impossible passion that a troubled writer forms for a fellow hotel guest, and the cholera epidemic which the authorities are all too keen to hush up. In Death in Venice, Britten revisits the subject of corruption of youth and innocence that so fascinated him and delivers a haunting theatrical experience of consummate power.
Deborah Warner’s production of Britten’s final opera celebrates the composer’s centenary year and reaffirms ENO’s position as the world’s leading producer of his operas. This production reunites award-winning director Warner with ENO Music Director Edward Gardner, who returns to Britten following ENO’s productions of Billy Budd (2012) and Peter Grimes (2009), for which his conducting was described as ‘deeply musical’ (Financial Times).

Emerging as the main character alongside Onegin himself, a somewhat shallow character bored with his present life, is the young Tatyana, and the libretto is ultimately about her.
Eugene Onegin features some of the finest and most popular music – both arias and orchestral numbers – ever composed by Tchaikovsky. Many of them are frequently heard on their own out of context. This masterpiece is a veritable treasure trove of Russian opera. | ||

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 6-Dec-13 07:00pm They are two artists in love: Mario Cavaradossi paints pictures for the Roman clergy but sympathizes with the “repubblica romana” and hides an escaped supporter of that republic in his garden. Floria Tosca makes glowing appearances as a singer at celebrations for opponents of the republic. But her love for Mario is the driving force of her life. He falls victim to the brutal cruelty of the state. Its enforcer, Baron Scarpia, may be driven by political zeal. In the case of Tosca and Mario, though, his motive is jealous lechery. To save Mario’s life, Tosca gives in to Scarpia’s extortive deal.
According to legend, Verdi had wanted to set the sensationalistic French play by Victorien Sardou, with some borrowings from political history, to music, but considered himself too old for the task. Then Puccini couldn’t resist the temptation to take Tosca as an opera plot. He created a music drama all’italiana, a veritable drama of voices and orchestra, which places the inner motivations and acts of the pragmatists, their hopeless entanglements in the machinery of subjugation in stark contrast to the musical naturalism of banal everyday life all around them. Above it all, however, stand the beauty, power and loneliness of the voice, her voice, the voice of Tosca.
| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 13-Dec-13 07:00pm They are two artists in love: Mario Cavaradossi paints pictures for the Roman clergy but sympathizes with the “repubblica romana” and hides an escaped supporter of that republic in his garden.

He falls victim to the brutal cruelty of the state. Its enforcer, Baron Scarpia, may be driven by political zeal. In the case of Tosca and Mario, though, his motive is jealous lechery.
