| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 16-Nov-13 06:00pm "If you travel to India and to Central Africa, you'll hear Trovatore.“ Nine years after the triumphant first performance, Verdi's opera had achieved the worldwide popularity that moved the composer to make this comment. The fabric of the opera could hardly be more gloomy: a gypsy who wishes to avenge the death of her mother at the stake, a count who wishes to use the execution of this gypsy to strike at his rival; a horrifying truth that is revealed at the moment of death. All the ingredients of Verdi's dramatic abundance appear here: mysterious sound worlds, harsh contrasts, vocal brilliance, opulent tableaux. The cohesive narrative style gives way to the variation of suggestive musical images with which Verdi served "the most important part of the drama“: revenge.

Staatsballett Berlin |
![]() | ||
| Staatsoper at Schiller Theater, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 110, 10625 Berlin, Germany Sunday 17-Nov-13 06:00pm Tchaikovsky - Boris Eifman Boris Eifman is considered one of the most high profile and interesting contemporary Russian choreographers. He is famous for his biographical and lengthy narrative ballets, which he usually presents with his own company, the Eifman Ballet St. Petersburg, on extended guest performance trips. He has long since taken the American theatre public by storm, and Boris Eifman rarely lets one of his choreographies out of his grasp. His ballets are distinguished by their psychological persona studies, which are embedded in dramatic and emotionally charged scenes. In „Tschaikowsky“, the multi-faceted personality of the great composer provides the focus. Peter I. Tchaikovsky decided to give up his secure, bourgeois position in order to dedicate himself entirely to the creation of the music by which he was so passionately driven. However, a feeling of deeply felt internal unrest and homelessness haunted him for the rest of his life. His emotional strife finds expression in his compositions; reason enough for Boris Eifman to trace the emotional world of the great Russian composer in choreography. Boris Eifman is dedicated to a passionate „ballet theatre“, in which the dramatic will to expression forms the basis for the dancing. Eifman thereby remains committed to classical dance, but with his choreographies he pursues the goal of „not only presenting people with a feast for the eyes, but much more than this, addressing their impressions and feelings in order to initiate a shared and living ritual.“ Image credit: Staatsballet Berlin | ||

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 17-Nov-13 07:00pm Papageno wants Papagena - Tamino his Pamina. But the pathway to love is not a simple one! Everyone has to undergo difficult trials. They even have to decide against murder and suicide, and do without food and drink and sometimes even without speech and song. The things that help them survive danger are a flute and a set of magic bells. The most world-renowned opera in a classically beautiful production, the legacy of stage director August Everding. The snake still breathes "real" fire, the Queen of the Night is still really a "star-flaming" monarch. The stage portrait (by Jürgen Rose) is wondrous fair. The magic of this opera really works here.

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Thursday 21-Nov-13 05:00pm The daughter of the King of the Spirits has been floating in an in-between state since the human Emperor conquered her: She is neither a spirit nor a human. A woman without a shadow – which means a woman who is infertile. A threat hangs over the Empress and Emperor like a punishment for a great guilt: If she does not become fully human, he will turn to stone. Her panic-stricken search for a shadow, accompanied by her scheming nurse, takes the Empress to a woman who refuses her husband's advances. She is prepared to sell her shadow for the seductive promise of eternal youth. However, the prospect of the transaction does not make the Empress happy.
Inspired by Oriental fairy-tales and with an admiring glance at Mozart's Zauberflöte, the successful partnership of Strauss and Hofmannsthal created a puzzling, massive work heavy with symbolism and powerful sounds which constantly demands interpretation: is it wallowing in magical worlds whilst the old era is destroyed in the First World War? The pathway of trials taken by two couples on which the women overcome their own natures through subjecting themselves to the merciless law of renewal and decay? A study of the female psyche shortly after Freud's postulation of sexual neuroses? Or perhaps the spiritual voyage of a woman through her fears and guilt feelings at the end of which everyone comes together again on the threshold of the eternal father. Mozart, of course, felt confident to give an answer with his heavenly, redemptive Requiem. | Union Chapel, Islington, London, London N1 2UN, United Kingdom Friday 22-Nov-13 07:30pm Barbican Britten: The Sixteen on Britten's 100th Birthday The concert finishes at approximately 10pm Benjamin Britten’s choral music connected him to the everyday musical lives of the UK and beyond more than any other part of his work, and it still does today. In this music – often written for amateur and community ensembles – Britten is at his most gregarious, his most radiant and sometimes his most experimental. The Sixteen present a smorgasbord of a cappella Britten at this concert, from the unerring perfection of his Hymn to St Cecilia to the advanced techniques and treacherous difficulty of the Flower Songs and Sacred and Profane.

| Staatsoper at Schiller Theater, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 110, 10625 Berlin, Germany Friday 22-Nov-13 07:30pm Tchaikovsky - Boris Eifman Boris Eifman is considered one of the most high profile and interesting contemporary Russian choreographers.

| Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Edvard Griegs plass 1, Bergen 5015, Norway Friday 22-Nov-13 07:30pm Mozart's Requiem After Bach’s musikal benediction, we are left with music for thought: How can we gain a deeper understandingo f life and death on earth? Mozart, of course, felt confident to give an answer with his heavenly, redemptive Requiem. Concertmaster David Stewart makes a meaningful contribution to the discussion as soloist in Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre, composed in Germany in the dark beginnings of WWII. Dona nobis pacem. «Musicianship is, to be sure, Mr. Suzuki’s greatest strength…a subtle ear for color, a keen sense of harmonic direction, and an ability to make phrases breathe and rhythms live». | National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 23-Nov-13 06:00pm Papageno wants Papagena - Tamino his Pamina.

| Carnegie Hall, Zankel Hall, New York City, NY, New York City, NY, United States Saturday 23-Nov-13 09:00pm So Percussion Of their last appearance at Carnegie Hall, The New Yorker music critic Alex Ross proclaimed that it was "one of the more entertaining and fulfilling evenings I've had in recent years ... I would have happily seen it five more times." For more than a decade, So Percussion has redefined the modern percussion ensemble as a flexible, omnivorous entity, pushing its voice to the forefront of American musical culture. The group brings its adventurous spirit and “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor, and bedlam” (The New Yorker) to a program that includes a major work they commissioned from David Lang, as well as the world premiere of a new work by composer-guitarist Bryce Dessner.
