| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 22-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: Solo Bach Stradivarius etc When our Artistic Director and Founder Denis Brott found the cello he wanted to perform on for the rest of his life, there was only one problem. He couldn’t afford it! This isn’t news in the music world as very few can afford a Stradivarius or, as Denis wanted, a 1706 Tecchler! With a few close friends, especially William Turner and the Canada Council’s Gilles Lefebvre, he helped create what would soon become a revolutionary institution, the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank. Their first instrument was Denis’s prized Tecchler.
Today the Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been heard in performance on the same stage at the same time. Until now! For the first time in the history of the Canada Council, we are proud to present 16 winners of the 2012 competition. This concert features each performer in a solo work by Bach. | La Monnaie | De Munt: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Thursday 23-May-13 07:00pm The fatal temptation to seek the truth in love: men and women scorch their hearts and wings in trying to unlock the secret of emotions. How quickly perversity and cruelty oust desire and tenderness. Here Mozart enters into a dialogue with Marivaux and Sade. As in his previous operas, he succeeds in producing an incredible tension, a breathtakingly beautiful structuring of the text (his third collaboration with Da Ponte) and the music. Director Michael Haneke, one of the most incisive and insightful film-makers of our time, presents us with his vision of a work that is as spell-binding, serious, complex and at times light as it is formidably modern, where the experience of infidelity transforms the four characters by laying bare their frailty. For the Austrian director, this is his first time at La Monnaie, while Ludovic Morlot conducts his second opera of the season.Image credit: © Flore-Aël Surun / Tendance Floue Ludovic Morlot, Conductor Michael Haneke, Director Christoph Kanter, Set Designer Anett Fritsch, Soprano: Fiordiligi Andreas Wolf, Baritone: Guglielmo Juan Francisco Gatell, Tenor: Ferrando Kerstin Avemo, Soprano: Despina William Shimell, Baritone: Don Alfonso Orchestre Symphonique et Choeurs de la Monnaie

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Thursday 23-May-13 07:00pm Men don't fall in love with courtesans! That's the opinion of Alfredo's father after his son moves in with the mortally ill Violetta Valéry. In her love for Alfredo Violetta even agrees. She leaves him, dies poor, ill – still dreaming of the happiness of true love. One of Verdi's most beloved operas continues to hold the mirror up to society and its hypocritical morality. An exemplary production! See it!

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 24-May-13 07:00pm Les Contes d'Hoffmann The protagonist of the opera is E.T.A. Hoffmann, the prototype of the German romantic period artist: his life is an artwork, his lower depths, his doubts, his grand inspirations – his crises. And all of these are connected with: women. Hoffmann in the opera tells of three types of woman in his tales, the “lifeless doll with a heart of ice”, the “virtuoso”, ill and destined to die, as well as the “shameless courtesan”.
Jacques Offenbach’s opera fantastique, premièred in 1881, is based on the play of the same name by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, who drew from the biographies and works of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Adelbert von Chamisso and Alfred de Musset to create their own artist’s drama. It is not a literature opera – the protagonists from different romantic tales are connected to one another by a fictitious Hoffmann – but rather more of a message to the writer, telling him to make art his matter of the heart, or perhaps even open up his heart with brutal frankness.
Co-production with the English National Opera, London.

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Violin Concertos This concert completes our week of Bach as we present all of his violin concertos. There are six of them that feature one, two or three violins as soloists and we have a star-studded cast of musicians to perform them for you. The great American violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to the Festival as soloist and leader of the ensemble. She’ll be joined by violinists Elizabeth Wallfisch and Timmy Chooi and OSM Principal Oboe Ted Baskin. The ensemble will be made up of the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 competition. A world-class evening in store for you!
The Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been seen on the same stage at the same time, until now.Rachel Barton Pine, Violin Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Marie-Ève Poupart, Violin Matilda Kaul, Violin Boson Mo, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Emily Westell, Violin Marcus Thompson, Viola Lambert Chen, Viola Emmanuel Vukovich, Viola Arnold Choi, Cello Rachel Desoer, Cello Ariel Barnes, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass Theodore Baskin, Oboe

| La Monnaie | De Munt: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Sunday 26-May-13 03:00pm The fatal temptation to seek the truth in love: men and women scorch their hearts and wings in trying to unlock the secret of emotions. For the Austrian director, this is his first time at La Monnaie, while Ludovic Morlot conducts his second opera of the season.Image credit: © Flore-Aël Surun / Tendance Floue Ludovic Morlot, Conductor Michael Haneke, Director Christoph Kanter, Set Designer Anett Fritsch, Soprano: Fiordiligi Andreas Wolf, Baritone: Guglielmo Juan Francisco Gatell, Tenor: Ferrando Kerstin Avemo, Soprano: Despina William Shimell, Baritone: Don Alfonso Orchestre Symphonique et Choeurs de la Monnaie | ||

| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Sunday 26-May-13 07:00pm Following the success of the Prague première of Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart was immediately commissioned to write another opera. This time, Lorenzo Da Ponte chose the story of the Spanish nobleman Don Juan. The subject matter had been considered a crowd-puller for more than a century, due in particular to the spectacular demise of the hero. Don Giovanni invites the statue of the Commendatore, whom he has murdered, to dinner, and is swallowed up by the jaws of hell. However, the view of the hero had changed considerably since the Spanish dramatist and monk Tirso de Molina first brought the blasphemous deeds and just punishment of the villain to the stage in the 17th century. While de Molina was still entirely on the side of order, which is ultimately re-established through divine intervention, Mozart and Da Ponte turn the sexual braggart and seducer into a man whose unquenchable thirst for happiness calls into the question the very foundations of social coexistence. Don Giovanni thus becomes – involuntarily and perhaps even without realising it – a danger for the social order, which can be maintained only if it functions smoothly. In their comedy, which is shrouded in darkness throughout, Mozart and Da Ponte do not conceal the price that others have to pay for this kind of self-realisation. However, since they do not pass any final judgement and instead do justice to both sides, their work becomes a drama of humanity of indestructible power and relevance – a dramma giocoso that becomes all the more comic the more the tragic aspects behind the course of events become apparent.
The much-vaunted German director Sebastian Baumgarten will present his interpretation of Don Giovanni in Zurich. At the rostrum will be the young Robin Ticciati, a rising star among the new generation of conductors. Our Don Giovanni is the charismatic Peter Mattei, who is sought-after in this role from the Scala in Milan to the New York Met.In Italian with German and English surtitles.Robin Ticciati, Conductor Sebastian Baumgarten, Director Barbara Ehnes, Set Designer Marina Rebeka, Soprano: Donna Anna Julia Kleiter, Soprano: Donna Elvira Anna Gorbachyova, Soprano: Zerlina Peter Mattei, Baritone: Don Giovanni Pavol Breslik, Tenor: Don Ottavio Rafal Siwek, Bass: The Commendatore Ruben Drole, Baritone: Leporello Lukas Jakobski, Bass: Masetto

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 26-May-13 07:00pm Men don't fall in love with courtesans! See it!
