| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Thursday 23-May-13 07:00pm Men don't fall in love with courtesans! That's the opinion of Alfredo's father after his son moves in with the mortally ill Violetta Valéry. In her love for Alfredo Violetta even agrees. She leaves him, dies poor, ill – still dreaming of the happiness of true love. One of Verdi's most beloved operas continues to hold the mirror up to society and its hypocritical morality. An exemplary production! See it!

| Staatsoper at Schiller Theater, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 110, 10625 Berlin, Germany Thursday 23-May-13 07:30pm Caravaggio Music by Moretti, Bruno (b. 1960)/Monteverdi, Claudio (1567-1643) Choreography by Mauro Bigonzetti Caravaggio, born Michelangelo Merisi, has entered history due to his paintings of dramatic intensity. Caravaggio used to venture the threshold beyond the pale throughout his life. He was seen for admiration of his work and harsh opposition towards his extraordinary realism in painting human beings. Due to his passionate personality, he encountered more than several conflicts with people around him, sponsors, and the law. One of his foremost artistic twists was the extreme contrast between brightness and darkness, light and shadow.
Mauro Bigonzetti is one of the leading choreographers of the Italian ballet which freed itself from the predominance of mainly classical opera companies in the 80’s. He created his choreographies mainly for the Aterballetto in Reggio Emilia that helped him to fame and worldwide attention. “When I think of Caravaggio, I think of the artist and the human being at the same time. These are the two sides of the human existence that interest me in particular. The relations of these two worlds are the inspiration for this work: the inner world on the one hand – and how it evolves artistically on the other.”
Mauro Bigonzetti has developed the piece CARAVAGGIO in collaboration with the Staatsballett Berlin.
45 minutes before each performance (except premieres), there is an introduction in the opera house (in German).
It is prepared and moderated by students of the institute of dance studies (Institut für Tanzwissenschaft) of Freie Universität Berlin.

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 24-May-13 07:00pm Les Contes d'Hoffmann The protagonist of the opera is E.T.A. Hoffmann, the prototype of the German romantic period artist: his life is an artwork, his lower depths, his doubts, his grand inspirations – his crises. And all of these are connected with: women. Hoffmann in the opera tells of three types of woman in his tales, the “lifeless doll with a heart of ice”, the “virtuoso”, ill and destined to die, as well as the “shameless courtesan”.
Jacques Offenbach’s opera fantastique, premièred in 1881, is based on the play of the same name by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, who drew from the biographies and works of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Adelbert von Chamisso and Alfred de Musset to create their own artist’s drama. It is not a literature opera – the protagonists from different romantic tales are connected to one another by a fictitious Hoffmann – but rather more of a message to the writer, telling him to make art his matter of the heart, or perhaps even open up his heart with brutal frankness.
Co-production with the English National Opera, London.

| The London Coliseum, St. Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4ES, United Kingdom Friday 24-May-13 07:30pm Puccini’s gift for writing emotional music is brought to the fore in La bohème’s tale of doomed love in poverty-stricken Paris. One of the world’s most recognised and widely performed operas, it focuses on two central relationships: that of the poet Rodolfo, who falls in love with the pretty but consumptive seamstress Mimì; and the painter Marcello, who has a glamorous and popular on-off mistress, Musetta.
Jonathan Miller’s production for ENO has quickly become a company classic and here receives its second revival since its 2009 premiere. Inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of the Paris Left Bank in the 1930s, Miller modernises the original bohemian setting to evoke the stark poverty of the day, creating a highly effective contemporary resonance, citing the film Withnail and I as an inspiration. Playing Mimì is Kate Valentine, who in recent seasons has played the Countess in Fiona Shaw’s production of The Marriage of Figaro and an ‘excellent’ (The Times) Helena in Christopher Alden’s Olivier Award-nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Gwyn Hughes Jones returns to the role of Rodolfo following his great success in ENO’s 2010 production, and recent acclaimed Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly.Jonathan Miller, Director Natascha Metherell, Revival Director Isabella Bywater, Set Designer Gwyn Hughes Jones, Tenor: Rodolfo Kate Valentine, Soprano: Mimì Richard Burkhard, Baritone: Marcello Angel Blue, Soprano: Musetta Andrew Craig Brown, Bass: Colline Duncan Rock, Baritone: Schaunard Simon Butteriss, Bass: Benoît

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Violin Concertos This concert completes our week of Bach as we present all of his violin concertos. There are six of them that feature one, two or three violins as soloists and we have a star-studded cast of musicians to perform them for you. The great American violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to the Festival as soloist and leader of the ensemble. She’ll be joined by violinists Elizabeth Wallfisch and Timmy Chooi and OSM Principal Oboe Ted Baskin. The ensemble will be made up of the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 competition. A world-class evening in store for you!
The Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been seen on the same stage at the same time, until now.Rachel Barton Pine, Violin Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Marie-Ève Poupart, Violin Matilda Kaul, Violin Boson Mo, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Emily Westell, Violin Marcus Thompson, Viola Lambert Chen, Viola Emmanuel Vukovich, Viola Arnold Choi, Cello Rachel Desoer, Cello Ariel Barnes, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass Theodore Baskin, Oboe

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 26-May-13 07:00pm Men don't fall in love with courtesans! See it!
