Handel based his work on the libretto by the famous poet Pietro Metastasio. In its first season Siroe was performed on 18 successive evenings, but it was never subsequently revived in Handel’s lifetime. The opera now receives its first performance in Göttingen with a top-rank cast performing under the musical direction of Laurence Cummings. | Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in London Sir Andrew Davis conducts a concert celebrating the exact 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, showcasing the British Wagner tradition and featuring one of the composer’s finest achievements. The Walküren (or Valkyries) of the title are an army of maidens who ride through the air on horseback. We see twin brother and sister, Siegmund and Sieglinde, fall in love, thereby committing both adultery and (unwittingly) incest. The former is subsequently killed by Wotan, although Brünnhilde (Wotan's warrior Valkyrie daughter) saves Sieglinde in the nick of time. The opera reaches a blazing climax during the unforgettable Third Act, when Brünnhilde is punished by Wotan, who surrounds her with a ring of fire that can only be crossed by a fearless hero destined to be none other than Sieglinde's eventual son, Siegfried. This concert also launches Wagner 200, a wideranging, London-based festival to celebrate the bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth, featuring events from May to November 2013 in association with leading venues and producers. It is the culmination of a day of activity at Southbank Centre, including pop up open-air performances on the riverside terraces and balconies featuring young singers and performers. Semi-staged performance in German with English surtitles Sir Andrew Davis, Conductor David Edwards, Stage Director Giselle Allen, Soprano Susan Bullock, Soprano James Rutherford, Bass Katherine Broderick, Soprano Elaine McKrill, Soprano Kimberly Myers, Soprano Jennifer Johnston, Mezzo-soprano Miriam Sharrad, Mezzo-soprano Antonia Sotgiu, Mezzo-soprano Harriet Williams, Mezzo-soprano Julianne Young, Mezzo-soprano Philharmonia Orchestra

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 22-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: Solo Bach Stradivarius etc When our Artistic Director and Founder Denis Brott found the cello he wanted to perform on for the rest of his life, there was only one problem. He couldn’t afford it! This isn’t news in the music world as very few can afford a Stradivarius or, as Denis wanted, a 1706 Tecchler! With a few close friends, especially William Turner and the Canada Council’s Gilles Lefebvre, he helped create what would soon become a revolutionary institution, the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank. Their first instrument was Denis’s prized Tecchler.
Today the Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been heard in performance on the same stage at the same time. Until now! For the first time in the history of the Canada Council, we are proud to present 16 winners of the 2012 competition. This concert features each performer in a solo work by Bach. An historic event!Ariel Barnes, Cello Boson Mo, Violin Jonathan Chan, Violin Véronique Mathieu, Violin Arnold Choi, Cello Emily Westell, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Emmanuel Vukovich, Violin Rachel Desoer, Cello Se-Doo Park, Cello Matilda Kaul, Violin Carissa Klopoushak, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Nikki Chooi, Violin Timothy Chooi, Violin

Three Stories This third concert in our TD Jazz series features the outstanding New York based pianist Eldar Djangirov. Eldar came to the Festival last year for his first ever concert in Montreal and blew us all away with his amazing dexterity and sophisticated musical choices. He’s back and this time in a solo performance that we know will sell out. Based on his recent CD titled Three Stories, Eldar will offer us standards, original works and classical selections ranging from Bach to Gershwin to Corea to Prokofiev to Radiohead. He’s been described as the next Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck called him a genius beyond question.
Don’t believe me? Go to his home page, scroll down and watch the video of his performance here last year. Don’t hesitate, don’t wait or you’ll be disappointed. Eldar’s back but for one night only!

| Oslo Concert Hall (Konserthus), Oslo 0250, Norway Saturday 25-May-13 03:00pm Saraste's farewell as chief conductor This is by no means a farewell concert as Saraste will be returning as guest conductor already in the 2013–2014 season. At the same time, these concerts mark the end of a seven-year engagement with us in Oslo as well as an extremely important chapter in the orchestra’s artistic history. It will be next to impossible to leave the concert hall unmoved when the final chorus of Mahler’s’ symphony no. 2 finishes with “Bereite dich zu leben”. | ||

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Violin Concertos This concert completes our week of Bach as we present all of his violin concertos. There are six of them that feature one, two or three violins as soloists and we have a star-studded cast of musicians to perform them for you. The great American violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to the Festival as soloist and leader of the ensemble. She’ll be joined by violinists Elizabeth Wallfisch and Timmy Chooi and OSM Principal Oboe Ted Baskin. The ensemble will be made up of the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 competition. A world-class evening in store for you!
The Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been seen on the same stage at the same time, until now.Rachel Barton Pine, Violin Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Marie-Ève Poupart, Violin Matilda Kaul, Violin Boson Mo, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Emily Westell, Violin Marcus Thompson, Viola Lambert Chen, Viola Emmanuel Vukovich, Viola Arnold Choi, Cello Rachel Desoer, Cello Ariel Barnes, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass Theodore Baskin, Oboe
