| Birmingham Conservatoire, Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham B3 3HG, United Kingdom Wednesday 19-Jun-13 07:30pm Delius Double ‘Delius and Ireland: A Celebration’ is a five-day Festival, one of the biggest the Conservatoire has ever hosted, involving over 60 individuals from the senior and junior Conservatoire, students and Faculty (including those famously associated with this repertoire), as well as orchestras, choirs and guest artists. Fifteen concert programmes will showcase songs, piano pieces, chamber and orchestral works - including performances of the complete solo piano works by John Ireland, the Delius Double and Ireland Piano Concerto – and culminate in a performance of Delius's masterpiece, Seadrift, with the Conservatoire Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Lionel Friend in Birmingham Town Hall on 21st June. This programme also includes the world première of an early work by Benjamin Britten entitled Chaos and Cosmos, which the Conservatoire’s students have been preparing and recording as part of the Britten Thematic Catalogue. | St Botolph without Bishopsgate, London, London EC2M 3TL, United Kingdom Wednesday 10-Jul-13 07:30pm The Return Flight of the Earls In 1607, the Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell sailed from Ireland for continental Europe, never to return. The consequences of the ‘Flight of the Earls’ were profound and its sequel was the Plantation of Ulster, the renaming of Derry as Londonderry and the building of its city walls in 1613. Hugo O’Neill, descendent of Tyrone and head of his family name, is Portuguese and lives in Setúbal. Stopping over after his ‘Return Flight’ to the ancestral homeland on 8 July, he will speak of the history and culture of Ireland leading up to the events of 400 years ago during this evening of words, music and refreshment.

| Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Saturday 13-Jul-13 07:00pm The masterly music composed by Giuseppe Verdi for Shakespeare’s powerful drama, combined with the highly-acclaimed direction of Ralf Långbacka and the costumes and stage designs of Anneli Qveflander together create one of the most successful productions in the history of the Savonlinna Opera Festival. This Macbeth has also been frequently seen on other stages, both in guest performances by the Savonlinna Opera Festival and in rental productions. When lust for power spurs husband and wife to ever more dastardly deeds, an honourable nobleman and first-rate soldier can turn into a human monster who, to be on the safe side, stops at nothing to liquidate any who stand in his way, both friend and foe. This perspective, highlighted in Långbacka’s vision, makes the Savonlinna Macbeth a more human and more “ordinary” character than the one presented in many other productions. And hence so credible and moving. | Collegium Leoninum, Bonn, Noeggerathstraße 34, 53111 Bonn, Germany Friday 13-Sep-13 08:00pm Cello Metamorphoses Johann Sebastian Bach’s cello suites are among the foundation documents for solo cello music. Without a doubt they influenced the composition of Britten’s colourful, descriptive solo works, which date from some 240 years later than the Bach suites. In Britten’s centenary year, the celebrated cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras has included in his programme a key work by the English composer, one now seen as one of the most penetrating works for the solo cello, with a view to relating it to Bach’s music for the instrument.Image credit: © Yoshinori Mido | ||

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 6-Dec-13 07:30pm Janine Jansen and Friends When the fire and passion of Vivaldi’s virtuosic violin concertos reached the ears of the ordered and disciplined Lutheran Johann Sebastian Bach, something special happened. Freed from his organ bench in the early 1720s, Bach composed a series of concertos for the violin that combined energetic propulsion and free-spirited individuality with the intricacy and cohesion he had made his own. Janine Jansen, the Dutch musician known for her expressive and infectiously energetic violin-playing, performs the concertos here with musicians from the Utrecht festival she herself founded.
