| Auditorium Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 25-May-13 06:30pm Pictures from Russia Three musical pictures from Russia rich in detail guarantee a unique musical experience with their vibrant tone colours and fascinating virtuosity. Glinka’s sweeping overture serves as a prelude to Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto – one of the most popular of its genre – which is in the able hands of Vadim Gluzman. Michail Jurowski, Guest Music Director of the Tonkünstler, presents a further masterpiece from his home country: the trip through Mussorgsky’s «Pictures at an Exhibition» perfectly rounds off the colourful cycle with a wealth of musical impressions. | Hong Kong Cultural Centre: Concert Hall, 10 Salisburg Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Ashkenazy Conducts Great-hearted, superb musicianship has characterised Vladimir Ashkenazy’s career, both as a pianist and a conductor. A musical giant of our time, his concerts are always thrilling, his interpretations sublimely artistic. These concerts mark his début in the HKPO’s season, and feature aptly passionate masterworks. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, a heroic celebration of Finland’s native wonders, evokes profound darkness and gleaming light. Richard Strauss’ Don Juan captures the blustering romance of a reckless lover. Then, from much later in Strauss’ life, the Four Last Songs mark a farewell to life and love. | ||

| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Sunday 26-May-13 07:00pm Following the success of the Prague première of Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart was immediately commissioned to write another opera. This time, Lorenzo Da Ponte chose the story of the Spanish nobleman Don Juan. The subject matter had been considered a crowd-puller for more than a century, due in particular to the spectacular demise of the hero. Don Giovanni invites the statue of the Commendatore, whom he has murdered, to dinner, and is swallowed up by the jaws of hell. However, the view of the hero had changed considerably since the Spanish dramatist and monk Tirso de Molina first brought the blasphemous deeds and just punishment of the villain to the stage in the 17th century. While de Molina was still entirely on the side of order, which is ultimately re-established through divine intervention, Mozart and Da Ponte turn the sexual braggart and seducer into a man whose unquenchable thirst for happiness calls into the question the very foundations of social coexistence. Don Giovanni thus becomes – involuntarily and perhaps even without realising it – a danger for the social order, which can be maintained only if it functions smoothly. In their comedy, which is shrouded in darkness throughout, Mozart and Da Ponte do not conceal the price that others have to pay for this kind of self-realisation. However, since they do not pass any final judgement and instead do justice to both sides, their work becomes a drama of humanity of indestructible power and relevance – a dramma giocoso that becomes all the more comic the more the tragic aspects behind the course of events become apparent.
The much-vaunted German director Sebastian Baumgarten will present his interpretation of Don Giovanni in Zurich. At the rostrum will be the young Robin Ticciati, a rising star among the new generation of conductors. Our Don Giovanni is the charismatic Peter Mattei, who is sought-after in this role from the Scala in Milan to the New York Met.In Italian with German and English surtitles.Robin Ticciati, Conductor Sebastian Baumgarten, Director Barbara Ehnes, Set Designer Marina Rebeka, Soprano: Donna Anna Julia Kleiter, Soprano: Donna Elvira Anna Gorbachyova, Soprano: Zerlina Peter Mattei, Baritone: Don Giovanni Pavol Breslik, Tenor: Don Ottavio Rafal Siwek, Bass: The Commendatore Ruben Drole, Baritone: Leporello Lukas Jakobski, Bass: Masetto

When our recording of this set first came out in the late ’80s the Gramophone critic wrote: ‘Is this great music or merely weird?’ After many more performances I can say quite clearly that it is both. Gesualdo was unique; and whatever one thinks of his behaviour in life, I am convinced he knew exactly what he was doing with his music. To complement Gesualdo’s chromatic style we have put together a second half of music which has similar features – experimental, chromatic, ahead of its time – ending with that much-loved arch-revolutionary, Monteverdi.’ (Peter Phillips) Part of Cadogan Hall's Choral at Cadogan 2012/13 series.

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 29-May-13 08:00pm The Art of Jean-Philippe Collard: Part 2 France has given great gifts to the world and one of them is pianist Jean-Philippe Collard. His elegance, refinement and pianistic style are legendary and we are proud to be able to offer him in concert for a second evening. His chosen repertoire will be French as he touches three of France’s greatest composers: Ravel, Debussy and Fauré.
In this program, Collard is joined by Denis Brott for a performance of Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano written in 1915. Violinist Giora Schmidt and Collard present Ravel’s famous Tzigane and the concert closes with a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s astonishingly beautiful and unmistakably French Quartet in C minor for Piano and Strings.
