In intriguing return concerts, he teams with insightful piano virtuoso Stephen Hough to perform both of Liszt’s piano concertos. From storms to dreamlike meditations, these works capture Liszt’s musical poetry. Framing them are works with aristocratic connections – to mark his centenary year, Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, a provocative tribute to the Japanese Emperor which caused a diplomatic scandal. Haydn’s Ninetieth Symphony, composed for the Paris elite, featuring one of his daring musical jokes designed to catch his audience out – if you like bursting into pplause when the music finishes, you’d better sit on your hands at this concert! | ||

| Chester Cathedral, Chester CH1 2HU, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 08:30pm International Artist Concert British conductor Duncan Ward is emerging as one of the most exciting talents of his generation. In 2013 he is Music Director of the critically-acclaimed charity Streetwise Opera’s 10thanniversary production and was recently appointed on the recommendation of Sir Simon Rattle as Conducting Scholar at the Berlin Philharmonic. After winning several grand prizes in her native Korea, Jackie Jaekyung Yoo has enjoyed further success in international competitions and has appeared as soloist with orchestras and performed numerous solo recitals across Europe. She performs Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No 1, one of the composer’s most popular works, with a wealth of uplifting tunes, frequent, provocative changes of mood and a wonderfully high-spirited last movement. As on the previous night, two Haydn symphonies complete the programme, including ‘La poule’, which derives its nickname from the ‘clucking’ second subject of its first movement. Tickets £18 Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975), Piano Concerto no. 1 in C minor for piano, trumpet and string orchestra, Op.35 Purcell, Henry (1659-1695), Chaconne in G Minor, Z 730 (arr. Britten) | ||

![]() | ||
| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Saturday 15-Jun-13 11:00am Quatuor Mosaïques I Quatuor Mosaïques is the world’s leading period instrument string quartet. Their gut-stringed instruments and uncluttered, perceptive musicianship lead to freshly considered and deeply satisfying performances of the classical and early Romantic repertoire. In the first of their two weekend residency concerts, they pitch us straight into baroque music and the wonderful improvisatory air of Purcell’s Fantasias for viol consort as a prelude to the richness of mature Haydn. Schubert’s monumental final quartet finds solace amidst the tumult, as the ailing but still young composer obsesses on an extraordinary torrent of musical ideas – chamber music on an epic scale. | ||

Werner, Three Fugues |
![]() | ||
| Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Aldeburgh, United Kingdom Sunday 16-Jun-13 03:00pm Quatuor Mosaïques II The art of fugue: music from Gregor Werner, Haydn’s predecessor at the Esterhazy court sets the foundation stones for a concert that culminates in one of the most extraordinary and explosive examples of the form in music history. Beethoven’s ‘great’ fugue, a conclusion to what is – even without its fi nale – a radical and profound late quartet, is so ambitious in scope and experimental in design that its shockwaves still resound even to modern ears. In a way Haydn is no less radical – his own fugal fi nale is part of a conscious revival of baroque forms and the theatrical drama provided by its four interlocking voices provides tantalizing tiny hints at what his most famous pupil would achieve. | New Garden: Palm Hall, Potsdam, Am neuen Garten, 14467 Potsdam, Germany Sunday 16-Jun-13 06:00pm Never Heard!? This evening promises a rendezvous with several unknowns. J.A.P. Schulz whose work in Berlin, Rheinsberg and Copenhagen actively influenced the musical life of his period was even mentioned in one breath with Haydn by his contemporaries. He is introduced here as an original, multifaceted piano composer – and the tangent piano which combines the advantages of harpsichord, clavichord and forte piano is also brought back. Schulze’s students in Copenhagen include C.E.F. Weyse who himself became an institution in the Danish music scene later, a gifted pianist whose improvisational art amazed even Franz Liszt. Christine Schornsheim on the other hand is not unknown to the piano lover: this passionate performer and dedicated specialist for historical keyboard instruments is certain to look after these rarities exceptionally well. Tickets € 30,- / 25,- / 10,-* *Some seats with restricted viewing!
