| Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Monday 8-Jul-13 06:00pm Lohengrin is Savonlinna’s tribute to the 200th anniversary in 2013 of the birth of Richard Wagner. By the time he came to write this, his sixth opera, Wagner had finally discovered his very own approach to opera as an art form emphasising the unity of words and music. As Franz Liszt, who conducted the first performance, said, old opera had reached the end of the road with Lohengrin – a masterpiece containing some of the most magnificent male choruses in all Wagner.
The interpretation created for the Olavinlinna stage by a German team led by stage director Roman Hovenbitzer seasons the libretto steeped in romantic chivalry with allusions to three eras: the Middle Ages, when the tale was originally written, the Romantic era, when the opera was composed, and the present day, an age that craves a messianic savour and heroic idols just as much as in Wagner’s times.
