| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 7-Jun-13 08:00pm Move to the Music Dance and music make perfect bedfellows, and while none of this program's pieces have been choreographed, they all find inspiration in dance forms. Playful with a hint of the ironic, Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik is only "little" in name. Its dance-like rhythms include a fun waltz and a melody worthy of imbibing at Oktoberfest. We usually hear Rachmaninoff's Morceaux de salon for piano, but this set of dance forms is perfect for chamber instruments. An early work, Dvořák's Sextet is replete with folk idioms and dances from his native Czechoslovakia that are a whirlwind of virtuosity. Chamber pieces performed by three of the best student ensembles of the week are sure to move you. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm A Musical Melange This blend of Italian, French, and Russian music with a sprinkling of strings, piano and woodwinds results in a melodic and colorful feast. A pinch of Bach permeates Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, a work of stark emotional power. Poulenc’s jazzy sextet, described as “very fast and fiery” by the composer himself, is infectiously delectable. The chance to hear the only surviving chamber work by opera composer Giuseppe Verdi is a delicious treat. This magnificent masterpiece will make you wish Verdi had written more instrumental music. And for dessert, enjoy two surprises from the best student ensembles of the week. | ||

| Süreyya Opera House, Istanbul, Eyüp Merkez Mh., Bahariye Cd No:29, Istanbul, Turkey Wednesday 19-Jun-13 08:00pm Berlin Counterpoint Ensemble Winning the hearts and minds of audiences for their idealism as much as for their ravishing music, the Berlin Counterpoint Ensemble will give the world premiere of the festival’s commission to Kamran İnce: “Nasreddin Hodja”, a work which will probably be a most warm-hearted surprise for music lovers. These six musicians living in Berlin represent Romania, Israel, Venezuela, Germany, USA and Turkey. Widely recognized as one of the most prominent ensemble pianists of our times, Zeynep Özsuca had cooperated with various artists including Magdalena Kožená, Rolando Villazon, Simon Rattle and Gustavo Dudamel. A promising flute player of his generation Aaron Dan was the winner of Belgrade International Flute Competition in 2005. And Yigal Kaminka is a musician whose mastery of contemporary oboe is matched by his virtuosity in baroque oboe and block flute. Sascha Rattle is a musician who drew a great attention since the first time he performed with Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist in 2009. Performed in numerous concerts in North and South America, Russia, Europe and the Middle East both as a soloist and a chamber music artist, Heidi Elizabeth Mockert is a bassoon player invited by several important chamber music ensembles. In addition to all prominent orchestras in Hungary, French horn player Dániel Molnár also performs in several important orchestras in Europe, including Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Tickets 60, 50, 40, 90 tl - student 30 tl. Bach, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750), Well-Tempered Clavier 1: Prelude and Fugue No. 24 in B Minor, BWV869 Ince, Kamran (b. 1960), Nasreddin Hodja (Istanbul Music Festival commission, world première) Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon (1562-1621), Variations on Mein junges Leben hat ein End (arr. |
![]() | ||
| Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 20-Jun-13 04:30pm The Power of Music You’ll be awed by the raw fervor of these pieces. Though intimate in the size of its performing forces, chamber music is every bit as commanding an emotional as the great orchestral masterworks. Brahms’ Sonata for Cello and Piano is expressive, intense, and forceful. The cello sings in this incredible work of genius. Baroque music is more known for complicated melodies than the more emotional Romantic Era. However, Telemann shows us that Baroque music can be as poignant and expressive. The Baal Shem Suite is a distinctly personal piece and an ode to the composer’s Jewish background. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 21-Jun-13 08:00pm Fall in Love Love in all its forms and complexity is the subject of this concert. You’ll fall in love all over again with Mozart through his mischievous string quintet, suffused with a blend of cheer and vigor with deeper, more serious emotions. Wagner offered perhaps the most romantic gift of all time in his Siegfried Idyll, a tender birthday present given to his wife on Christmas morning. Intimate and cozy, this work’s soft beauty is compelling.Harbison turns to familial love in Songs America Loves to Sing. Instrumental versions of beloved songs from his childhood - and yours - are woven together into a complex counterpoint that is sometimes melancholy, sometimes witty, sometimes impish but always poignant. You’ll also fall in love with two of the best student ensembles of the week.
