| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Thursday 23-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Brandenburg Concertos Bach wrote these six concertos for various instruments for the Margrave of Brandenburg who would eventually become the King of Prussia and Saxony. He was never paid and never thanked! It took 150 years before they became known as the Brandenburg Concertos and they are considered to be the greatest works in the Baroque repertoire. You’ll hear all of them in this concert that features a star-studded cast led by distinguished British violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch and including trumpet sensation Jens Lindemann and the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 Competition along with many of Montreal’s finest musicians.
Today the Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been heard in performance on the same stage at the same time. Until now! For the first time in the history of the Canada Council, we are proud to present 16 winners of the 2012 competition. This concert features each performer in a solo work by Bach. An historic event!Jens Lindemann, Trumpet Vincent Lauzer, Recorder Kirsten Zander, Oboe Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Alex Raine-Wright, Recorder Louis-Philippe Marsolais, Horn Jocelyn Veilleux, Horn Marc Gibbons, Oboe Marcus Thompson, Viola Betsy Macmillan, Viola da Gamba Elin Söderström, Viola da Gamba Denis Brott, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass | ||

Since then he has performed scores of solo recitals and more than 100 orchestral appearances in Canada and abroad, released two important CDs, and impressed audiences, critics, artistic directors and fellow musicians around the world. Last December Jan was featured with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Centre; this year aone, by the time he returns to Stratford in August hewill have performed in several Canadian cities and in Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Poland, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States, often with return visits to these international destinations. Since being with us last summer, Jan's other proud achievement has been the recording and release of his new Deutsche Grammophone compact disc, Chopin Etudes. Each of Jan's performancs in Stratford will be centered on the 24 compositions presented in this sparkling new recording. BBC Music Magazine has called Jan Lisiecki “perhaps the most ‘complete’ pianist of his age.” 2013 marks Jan's fourth consecutive season with Stratford Summer Music where his talent and personal charm have made him an audience favourite and where we agree heartily with the BBC's assessment. Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra was founded in Toronto in 1981 and takes its name from a German compound noun meaning "music for dining" - an appropriate appellation for an ensemble which has produced so many lavish musical feasts over the past 31 years. Along with its many annual performances at home in Canada, this internationally renowned orchestra has - for the past 19 summers - appeared at the Klang und Raum festival held in an ancient monastery in Irsee, Germany. When John Miller and his artistic colleague, Neil Crory, heard that this German festival would come to an end in 2011, they approached the orchestra's Artistic Director, Jeanne Lamon, to invite Tafelmusik to Stratford Summer Music with the idea that the music of J.S. Bach, and in particular his many Cantatas, could be the focus of the orchestra’s programming for many years into the future. 2013 thus marks the second season when this exceptional orchestra, with soloists, will return to Stratford Summer Music to present Herr Bach's music. Because Jeanne Lamon has announced her relinquishing leadership of the orchestra, this year's performances may be the final opportunities for our audiences to experience Tafelmusik under its beloved and distinguished music director.
