| New Palace Sanssouci: Palace Theatre, Potsdam, Sanssouci Park, Am Neuen Palais, 14469 Potsdam, Germany Wednesday 19-Jun-13 07:30pm Premiere: Proserpina Opera in one act by Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792) Libretto by Johan Henrik Kellgren Based on a sketch by Gustav III of Sweden. Sung in Swedish with German supertitles
It was a Swedish fellow student at the university of Göttingen who suggested to would-be composer Joseph Martin Kraus trying his luck at Gustav III’s court in Stockholm. In 1772 Gustav founded the royal opera to raise his nation’s cultural prestige and to further the development of its own national culture. Soon the repertoire, which the king managed himself, also contained operas in Swedish. He designed libretti and was always on the lookout for new talents. All in all, there were striking similarities between him and his mother’s brother: famous Uncle Frederic II.
Inspired by ancient mythology, the one act piece "Proserpin", which received a preview performance in 1781 at Uriksdal Palace, launched composer Kraus’ distinguished career as royal Swedish conductor at the tender age of 25. His score which is rich in both colours and events he largely leaves the traditional number opera structure and finds his very individual compositional solutions. This is the work of one of the period’s most original and most innovative opera creators. Haydn called him a genius. That is a word he only used for one other man: Mozart.

Since the Danish monarch’s sister Anne was married to the future king of England, exquisite English music artists soon found their way to the music-loving king’s court. So Christian’s court orchestra is not only shining in Venetian splendour, the Golden Age of English music also lets its brightest star glitter in Denmark: John Dowland. His "Tear Pavane" alias "Flow my Tears" captured an epoch’s "Weltschmerz", turned it into sounds and was heard all across Europe. In 1604 Dowland put together seven self-made cover versions of his greatest hit with other dances for an instrumental consort and dedicated it to England’s new Queen Ann. Some of this music was created in her hometown of Copenhagen.

Paul Hillier and his ensemble THEATRE OF VOICES show him integrated into a wide reaching network of musical relations that stretched from Denmark and Sweden all the way to Italy. Mysterious sounds are heard, the grottos are filled with archaic singing and call on wondrous and eerie creatures to appear from their hiding places. Trolls, elves and all kinds of mystical beings appear from and disappear into the darkness: midsummer night in Sanssouci.
You are strolling through the nightly park between Nordic Garden and Orangery Terraces. First you may meet a vocal enchantress, then there is a Sami evocator and an enchanting choir and secret musicians let you listen to their invisible music: even musicologist Johann Mattheson referred to a reliable source when he reported "underground cliff concerts", that confuse the minds of decent Norwegians during certain nights. Allow yourself to be enchanted by an unforgettable midsummer night’s dream in Sanssouci.

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 22-Jun-13 07:00pm Illusions - like Swan Lake Music by Tchaikovsky, Pyotr Ilyich (1840-1893) Choreography by John Neumeier …Silence. An empty room in a gloomy castle. Scattered throughout the room, concealed sculptures fill the empty space. Shown in by reverent guards, a man stares into nowhere. The gate slams shut behind him. Gradually, the king begins to grasp – imprisoned and deprived of power – his situation, his surroundings. In an introverted gesture, he places his hand on his heart… the music meets his lament with the first notes of Swan Lake...
The premiere of llusions – Like Swan Lake was a celebrated success of the Ballet Festival Week of 2011. Finally, John Neumeier’s ballet about the fairy tale king had been brought to its original setting.
Illusions is a Royal thriller with traditional folklore dancing, complete with a good dose of local Bavarian color. The ever-present reference to one of the greatest works in ballet history becomes most apparent in the second act, where Lew Iwanow’s original choreography is integrated: “The reconstruction of a golden hour of St. Petersburg ballet history, elaborate stage design magic supported by the captivating musical score. Most of all, it is a ballet drama that touches us right at the core because of its soulful, vivid characters, instead of showcasing lifeless swans and princes.”Image credit: Charles Tandy | ||

| New Palace Sanssouci: Palace Theatre, Potsdam, Sanssouci Park, Am Neuen Palais, 14469 Potsdam, Germany Saturday 22-Jun-13 07:30pm Opera in one act by Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792) Libretto by Johan Henrik Kellgren Based on a sketch by Gustav III of Sweden.

"I've written Hanjo, as if it were a dream. The protagonist, Hanako ,lives in a world of madness, which is beyond our everyday reality, for a long time waiting for the man she loves. When he finally comes back, she no longer recognizes him. The image of this man in her head has become more real than the man who is actually in front of her. | New Chambers Sanssouci: Ovid Gallery, Potsdam, Im Park Sanssouci, 14469, Potsdam, Germany Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:00pm The King of Denmark's Delight Virtuosic music for lute and orpharion solo and in duets John Dowland was one of the greatest masters of writing music for the lute. When he reached the pinnacle of his career he was Christian IV’s court lutenist in Copenhagen for eight years. He was rumoured to be an English spy, or maybe people envied his annual salary of 500 thalers. Indeed, Tobias Hume could only dream of making such an amount. He earned his money as a mercenary and nearly had to go with Gustav Adolf’s army when they marched into Mecklenburg. So captain Hume could only be a part-time viola da gamba genius. Nevertheless, in 1607 he also arranged his "Poeticall Musicke" for lutes clearly thinking of the orpharion. English musicians made this lute instrument with its metal strings popular at the Danish court, too. That is why one of three remaining original examples is kept in the Museum of Musical History in Copenhagen and serves as model for almost all modern copies. Listening to an orpharion is a rare treat. Listening to a duet of orpharions is practically unheard of. Don’t miss the opportunity.
