| Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Friday 5-Jul-13 07:00pm The best-known opera by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, likened as a child to Mozart in view of his outstanding talent, serves as a suitable contrast to the otherwise Verdi-Wagner orientation of the 2013 season. Samson and Delilah is a worthy successor to the previously produced French operas on the Olavinlinna stage.
The story based on the Bible about the passionate relationship between the victorious Hebrew leader Samson and the treacherous Philistine maiden Delilah generates thrilling tension in this splendid opera. The mighty warrior whose strength is his long hair is totally disarmed by the mezzo-soprano aria, one of the finest in operatic literature, “Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix (My heart opens itself to your voice). In cooperation with The Theater Erfurt. | Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Saturday 6-Jul-13 07:00pm In honour of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi, the Savonlinna Opera Festival is adding to its repertoire one of the best-loved and most frequently-performed operas of all time. For many an opera lover this will mean a long-cherished dream come true: La traviata at last in Savonlinna!
Can a flighty courtesan accustomed to a life of pleasure genuinely fall in love, and does she deserve true happiness? Verdi was clearly inspired by this tragic, beautiful love story about Violetta and Alfredo, built round these fundamental questions. The music of La traviata is some of his very finest: coloratura arias that bubble like champagne, and melodies that play exquisitely on the ear follow one upon the other like a row of sparkling gems, pampering the listener again and again. Paolo Olmi, Conductor Stefano Romano, Conductor Mariusz Treliński, Director Boris Kudlicka, Set Designer Jennifer Rowley, Soprano: Violetta Valéry Nadja Stefanoff, Mezzo-soprano: Flora Bervoix Maxim Axenov, Tenor: Alfredo Germont Andrzej Dobber, Baritone: Giorgio Germont Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir Savonlinna Opera Festival Orchestra

| Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Monday 8-Jul-13 06:00pm Lohengrin is Savonlinna’s tribute to the 200th anniversary in 2013 of the birth of Richard Wagner. By the time he came to write this, his sixth opera, Wagner had finally discovered his very own approach to opera as an art form emphasising the unity of words and music. As Franz Liszt, who conducted the first performance, said, old opera had reached the end of the road with Lohengrin – a masterpiece containing some of the most magnificent male choruses in all Wagner.
The interpretation created for the Olavinlinna stage by a German team led by stage director Roman Hovenbitzer seasons the libretto steeped in romantic chivalry with allusions to three eras: the Middle Ages, when the tale was originally written, the Romantic era, when the opera was composed, and the present day, an age that craves a messianic savour and heroic idols just as much as in Wagner’s times. Jari Hämäläinen, Conductor Roman Hovenbitzer, Stage Director Kirsten Chambers, Soprano: Elsa von Brabant Thomas Hall, Baritone: Friedrich von Telramund Tuija Knihtilä, Mezzo-soprano: Ortrud Mika Kares, Bass: Heinrich der Vogler Matias Tosi, Bass: The King's Herald Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir Savonlinna Opera Festival Orchestra

| Sigyn Hall, Turku, Linnankatu 60, Turku 20100, Finland Sunday 11-Aug-13 01:00pm Akseli by composer Kimmo Hakola is the new monologue opera composed for Jorma Hynninen. Akseli tells the story of the Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela, who is perhaps best known for his illustrations of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. With this role, Jorma Hynninen bids farewell to the opera stages. The libretto written by Pekka Hako is partly based on Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s own writings. With seven scenes, he looks back at his youth in Paris and Berlin, his deep love for this wife Mary and the death of their daughter, his lifelong friend Louis Sparre… He reflects on the untouched surrounding wilderness, the soul of the Finnish people, Kalevala, the magical lights and colors of Africa and his passion for art. Please note that the performance is in Finnish.Image credit: Yehina Eweis | ||
