| Dr Anton Philipszaal, The Hague, Spuiplein 150, The Hague 2511, Netherlands Sunday 26-May-13 11:00am ROndje Wereldorkest [AROund the world with the orchestra] In this performance, ten musicians from the Residentie Orkest/The Hague Philharmonic discover that their instruments have sisters and brothers all over the world, and that they’re all on the menu at the Residentie Restaurant. The waiter will serve a Chinese guzheng under the warm light of an alpenhorn lamp, and with the Indian items, you’ll have to blow hard to keep the snakes charmed! This humorous performance has surprising tastes from all over the world, brought together in a set meal of sounds.

| Westergasfabriek: Gashouder, Amsterdam, Klönneplein 1, Amsterdam 1014 BE, Netherlands Saturday 1-Jun-13 08:30pm Innovative opera based on Les Liaisons Dangereuses. After Quartett by Heiner Müller.
The Holland Festival 2013 opens with a tale of love, intrigue, heartbreak and torment. Based on Heiner Müller’s stage version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, composer Luca Francesconi wrote an opera which had its world premiere in 2011 at Milan’s La Scala Theatre with a spectacular staging by Àlex Ollé.
On a stage that symbolises their emotional prison, Valmont and Merteuil fight their bitter, violent battles, a vocal duel interspersed with orchestral dreams of what could have been, but never will be. After all, the two former lovers not only play a deadly game with the hearts of others, with their cynical machinations they ultimately also condemn their own chances of happiness to failure.Co-production between Teatro alla Scala and Wiener Festwochen with IRCAM Paris. In English with Dutch surtitles. Running time 1 hour 20 minutes with no interval.Tickets €45/35/25 with students/CJP €17.50 for all categories.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk Susanna Mälkki, Conductor Ensemble da camera dell'Accademia, Teatro alla Scala Allison Cook, Mezzo-soprano: Marquise de Merteuil Robin Adams, Baritone: Vicomte de Valmont | ||

| Royal Theater Carré, Amsterdam, Amstel 115-125, Amsterdam 1018 EM, Netherlands Sunday 2-Jun-13 08:30pm El Gusto - Casbah Blues In their younger years, the musicians of the chaabi orchestra El Gusto enjoyed great fame in the Casbah, the traditional quarter clustered around the citadel of Algiers. Side by side Jews and Muslims, Africans and Europeans played and sung their traditional songs about love, heartbreak, friendship and betrayal. That is until the Algerian revolution drove them apart. Now these musicians are all in their seventies and eighties, but they still have a great passion for the chaabi, entrancing folk music with influences from North Africa, Andalusia and the Middle-East. The musicians were gathered together from all parts of the world for a historical reunion, proving that music has no age limit. For they still play their instruments as if they were dancing with a beautiful woman, and still their deep-rooted songs ‘make you forget hunger, thirst or grief’.Tickets €35/20, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. | Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, Waterlooplein 22, Amsterdam, Netherlands Tuesday 4-Jun-13 05:30pm In his only comic opera, Wagner distilled poetry and music into a single unified form that unfolds as an unbroken stream of music-dramatic dialogue. It became a singspiel, partly based on personal experience, about the romance between the bourgeois girl Eva Pogner and the knight Walther von Stolzing, who may only wed his beloved once he has won the annual singing contest. The cobbler Hans Sachs represents, on the one hand, the old guard as a member of the Guild of Mastersingers; on the other hand he is open to modernization and stimulates the knight’s artistic gifts, stoking the conflict between narrow-mindedness and true artistry – a theme certainly not unfamiliar to Wagner himself. Love triumphs in the end, thanks to Sachs’ closing address in which he praises the ‘master’s honour’, a typically German honour one might view with considerable scepticism: the Meistersinger finale was, after all, misused for political purposes.Running time 5 hours 25 minutes with two intervals, in German with Dutch and English surtitles.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk Marc Albrecht, Conductor David Alden, Director Thomas Johannes Mayer, Bass: Hans Sachs Alastair Miles, Bass: Pogner Pascal Pittie, Tenor: Kunz Vogelgesang Mattijs van de Woerd, Baritone: Konrad Nachtigall Adrian Eröd, Baritone: Sixtus Beckmesser Thomas Oliemans, Baritone: Fritz Kothner Brian Galliford, Tenor: Balthasar Zorn Roberto Saccà, Tenor: Walther von Stolzing Ana Maria Martinez, Soprano: Eva Sarah Castle, Mezzo-soprano: Magdalene Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest Koor van De Nederlandse Opera Marcel Beekman, Tenor: Ulrich Eisslinger | ||

In her solo work she draws out a broad spectrum of sounds from her instrument, ranging from intimate simplicity to huge soundscapes. At the Bimhuis, Guðnadóttir will play two works on newly developed electric cellos: one utilising feedback and one which is connected to wooden sculptures causing them to vibrate along with the music. The main piece she will be playing is the title work of her latest album Leyfðu ljosinu; a multi-layered, hypnotic sound construction consisting of vocals and cello, which gradually swells to massive proportions.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Thursday 6-Jun-13 08:30pm For Bunita Marcus The music of the American composer Morton Feldman (1926-1987) is a paragon of understatement. His compositions are characterised by a deceptive emptiness and daringly sparse instrumentations. Feldman wrote this piano work for composer Bunita Marcus, who was inseparable as his artistic companion in the last years of his life. The score plays a complex and elongated game with different, overlapping time signatures and metres. By creating a scarcity of events, Feldman manages to exert a hypnotic influence on the listener. Hardly anything happens and at the same time a lot happens, and thereby his music touches on the mysteries of time itself. It’s mystical stuff that could not be in any better hands than Reinbert de Leeuw’s, who is a master of tension and focus..Tickets €22, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. | Concertgebouw: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands Saturday 8-Jun-13 01:30pm The Gospel according to the other Mary John Adams has proven in his past work that he is not one to shun big themes. Famous for being the composer who added depth to the minimal music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass by allowing romantic gestures and modern techniques, he has dealt with political issues such as terrorism, 9/11, the atomic bomb and the Los Angeles riots. Now Adams is taking the challenge to delve into the greatest story of Western history. He created a
modern passion, centring not on Jesus, but on Mary Magdalene. Through her eyes we witness the suffering of the world and the compassion of man. A poignant and captivating modern passion for our current dark times. Los Angeles première 31st May 2012.

Three of The Netherlands’ most outstanding ensembles join the virtuoso American percussionist and conductor Steven Schick for a marathon performance of Scottish composer James Dillon’s masterpiece Nine Rivers. This vast, ambitious work consists of nine parts for varying instrumentations, ranging from solo percussion and a cappella choir to strings and electronics. The piece focuses on the river as a metaphor for time and memory, while also playing games with the memory of the audience.
Dillon was inspired to write Nine Rivers by Rimbaud’s Le Bateau Ivre. Just as the boat in this famous poem crashes through the river towards the ocean, Dillon’s music moves from weightless hyperactivity through bleak horror to Wagnerian grandeur in a long, continuous, ever evolving ritual.

| Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, Waterlooplein 22, Amsterdam, Netherlands Monday 10-Jun-13 05:30pm In his only comic opera, Wagner distilled poetry and music into a single unified form that unfolds as an unbroken stream of music-dramatic dialogue.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Tuesday 11-Jun-13 08:30pm Desdemona Toni Morrison's response to Othello discusses racism, war and oppression.
Nobel prize laureate Toni Morrison wrote Desdemona after a discussion about Othello with the director Peter Sellars. In her text, Morrison gives a voice to Desdemona, who has a modest part in Shakespeare’s play. From the grave, the Shakespearean heroine fills in the gaps in her history through an intimate dialogue with Barbary, the African nanny who raised her.
With her mesmerising voice, award-winning Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré gives a virtuoso performance as Barbary. Traoré also wrote the music, which is performed by two musicians and two singers from Mali. As the play develops, we discover a different Desdemona, a woman of flesh and blood who speaks out about racism, war and oppression – and the transformative power of love.
