| Sadler's Wells, London, Rosebery Avenue,, London EC1R 4TN, United Kingdom Saturday 18-May-13 02:30pm Northern Ballet — The Great Gatsby Northern Ballet returns to Sadler's Wells this spring with The Great Gatsby, a brand new full-length ballet for 2013, after achieving great success with Cleopatra in 2011.On New York’s Long Island in the heady, indulgent days of the 1920s, young Midwesterner Nick Carraway meets his infamous neighbour Jay Gatsby – a mysterious millionaire with a secret past and a penchant for lavish parties. As the sparkling façade of Gatsby’s world begins to slip, Carraway comes to see the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lie beneath. Adapted from the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is directed and choreographed by Artistic Director David Nixon OBE, with co-direction from Patricia Doyle, sets by Jérôme Kaplan, lighting by Tim Mitchell and costumes also by David Nixon. As The Great Gatsby enjoys a huge resurgence in popularity, this promises to be a stunning retelling of one of the 20th century’s most compelling stories, brought to life by a remarkable company. | ||

| Dorking Halls, Dorking RH4 1SG, United Kingdom Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm Dorking Concertgoers Society: Harp Duo Recital by Mélissa Kenny & Tamara Young This concert is a musical journey exploring two contrasting and complementary repertoires: French and Spanish music through the medium of two harps. The first part focuses on French repertoire of the 20th century and Impressionism and includes works by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Bernard Andrès. The second part explores Spanish songs, dances and traditional rhythms from Spain as well as South America and includes works by Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados and traditional South American pieces. With this programme we are hoping to allow a wider audience to discover the colours of the harp, an instrument which remains quite unfamiliar in concert halls, playing outside the orchestra. In an intimate chamber music context, we will explore the perhaps less-known fiery and rhythmical possibilities of the two harps and the famous airy and magical feel of the two instruments playing together.Sponsored by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. | Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm International Chamber Music Season: Borletti-Buitoni Trust celebrated with Mitsuko Uchida Five acclaimed soloists, including 'superb pianist' (New York Times) Jonathan Biss and 'violinist of fiery talents' (The Times) Alina Ibragimova, join forces to perform Schubert's ever popular Trout quintet in this second Borletti-Buitoni Trust concert. Already known for her varied recordings, from Schubert to Michel van der Aa, mezzo soprano Christianne Stotijn moves effortlessly between styles and here presents two very different sets of songs. Hear Brahms' brooding Two songs for alto, viola and piano and Schoenberg's early atonal cycle Buch der hängenden Gärten. As The Times wrote of a recent recording, 'whatever the song, Stotijn sings from the heart to the heart.' Before joining Stotijn in the Brahms, Antoine Tamestit plays the first of Mozart's energetic two duos for violin and viola with Alina Ibragimova. Queen Elizabeth Hall at 6.15pm - pre-concert talk. In 2012 the Elias String Quartet embarks on a tour performing the complete cycle of Beethoven quartets at venues all over the UK. In early 2011, with BBT's support, they launched a unique, website which openly shares with the public their immersion in the study, analysis, practice and discovery of Beethoven. Their aim was to demystify both the music and reveal how they are preparing for this huge undertaking. Find out how they have fared. Free. The Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall at 9.45pm - Borletti-Buitoni Trust 'Out of the Box'. Martin Fröst and friends - watch this space to find out who! Free. | ||
