| La Monnaie | De Munt: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Thursday 23-May-13 07:00pm The fatal temptation to seek the truth in love: men and women scorch their hearts and wings in trying to unlock the secret of emotions. How quickly perversity and cruelty oust desire and tenderness. Here Mozart enters into a dialogue with Marivaux and Sade. As in his previous operas, he succeeds in producing an incredible tension, a breathtakingly beautiful structuring of the text (his third collaboration with Da Ponte) and the music. Director Michael Haneke, one of the most incisive and insightful film-makers of our time, presents us with his vision of a work that is as spell-binding, serious, complex and at times light as it is formidably modern, where the experience of infidelity transforms the four characters by laying bare their frailty. For the Austrian director, this is his first time at La Monnaie, while Ludovic Morlot conducts his second opera of the season.Image credit: © Flore-Aël Surun / Tendance Floue Ludovic Morlot, Conductor Michael Haneke, Director Christoph Kanter, Set Designer Anett Fritsch, Soprano: Fiordiligi Andreas Wolf, Baritone: Guglielmo Juan Francisco Gatell, Tenor: Ferrando Kerstin Avemo, Soprano: Despina William Shimell, Baritone: Don Alfonso Orchestre Symphonique et Choeurs de la Monnaie | ||

| La Monnaie | De Munt: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Monday 27-May-13 08:00pm Albert Dohmen: Sonetti di Michalangelo e del Petrarca The recital by Albert Dohmen provides the public with a chance to discover an exceptional singer who is, amongst other things, one of the most talented Wotans of his generation. The sheer sonorousness of his dark, warm voice is fascinating, and gives substance to all the registers of the performance. His musical command and sensitivity are also remarkable in the most intimist repertoires, such as the romantic Lied, presented here in all its aspects and extremes: the wonder of love with sonnets by Petrarch set to music by Liszt, existential meditation with Wolf’s sober and powerful Michelangelo Lieder, the hallucinatory melancholy which permeates Pfitzner’s melodies, and the sublimation of death by love, which Strauss celebrates like no other. Befreit – ‘liberated’ – is the last Lied in this programme, and O Glück – ‘oh happiness’ – is the last sung word. This is, indeed, what the evening promises.Image credit: (c) Johannes Ifkovits Pfitzner, Hans (1869-1949), Lieder | ||

Anyone who has seen it surely remembers the scene in which a spaceship dances majestically around the Earth to the sound of An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube) by Johann Strauss (Jr)… Music by Ligeti, Khachaturian, and Richard Strauss also helped to make the film what it is. | Flagey: Studio 4, Brussels, Place Saint-Croix / Heilig Kruisplein, 1050 Brussels, Belgium Friday 14-Jun-13 08:15pm Alain Altinoglu: Boléro After his brilliant debut at La Monnaie in Cendrillon, Alain Altinoglu continues to browse through the French repertoire. Like some of Ernest Chausson’s other compositions, his only symphony, composed in 1889, is an undervalued gem. It confirms Chausson’s key position in the evolution of French symphonic music: building on the legacy of Franck and Wagner, he pointed the way forward to the burgeoning impressionism in music. Several years later Fauré composed music for Maeterlinck’s play Pelléas et Mélisande, from which he distilled a concert suite that is his symphonic masterpiece. The big hit by Ravel that is also on the programme was equally inspired by the performing arts. In 1927 Ida Rubinstein asked him to write the music for a ballet. Ravel based his composition on the bolero, because of the melodic simplicity and repetitive rhythm of this Spanish dance. It is no exaggeration to say that this Boléro immediately found its way onto the concert platform and has stayed there ever since.Image credit: (c) Gilles Larvor _ Agence Vu | ||

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Tuesday 25-Jun-13 08:00pm Carlo Rizzi: Pathetique Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Sixth Symphony are unquestionably two of the composer’s most frequently performed works. In 1889 he conceived the plan to compose a new grand symphony, whose content should remain enigmatic. It was his sixth and last symphony, with a characteristic finale in the form of an Adagio lamentoso. It is not known whether Tchaikovsky already felt his own end approaching, but like his earlier symphonies, the Sixth Symphony does indeed closely reflect his feelings. The First Piano Concerto, which he began to compose in 1874, reflects his view that the concert performance of music was a contest between orchestra and soloist, whom he regarded as equals. Despite its continuing popularity, this concerto has lost none of its power and freshness, especially in the hands of Elisabeth Leonskaja, who is already a living legend.Image credit: (c) Denis Dailleux _ Agence Vu copy | ||
