| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Wednesday 19-Jun-13 08:30pm Troparion and Suster Bertken The Dutch composer Rob Zuidam has always had an eye for headstrong women. In his first collaboration with festival director Pierre Audi he puts two of them on stage. Suster Bertken tells about the fascinating life of the medieval ascetic Berta Jacobs, who bricked herself in at the Buur Church in Utrecht, in order to devote her life to God. This work from 2010 will be staged for the first time, in combination with the brand new Troparion, which Zuidam wrote for alto Helena Rasker, the young violinist Liza Ferschtman and a small instrumental ensemble. The piece is about a woman who sheds her tears on a dead branch, hoping God will breathe new life into it. According to Zuidam the work is about ‘hope and melancholy and the inability to bridge the gap between past and future.’Tickets €29 - 24, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. Running time 2 hours 5 minutes, with one internal. In medieval Dutch and ancient Greek with Dutch surtitles.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk | ||

| Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, Waterlooplein 22, Amsterdam, Netherlands Thursday 20-Jun-13 05:30pm In his only comic opera, Wagner distilled poetry and music into a single unified form that unfolds as an unbroken stream of music-dramatic dialogue. It became a singspiel, partly based on personal experience, about the romance between the bourgeois girl Eva Pogner and the knight Walther von Stolzing, who may only wed his beloved once he has won the annual singing contest. The cobbler Hans Sachs represents, on the one hand, the old guard as a member of the Guild of Mastersingers; on the other hand he is open to modernization and stimulates the knight’s artistic gifts, stoking the conflict between narrow-mindedness and true artistry – a theme certainly not unfamiliar to Wagner himself. Love triumphs in the end, thanks to Sachs’ closing address in which he praises the ‘master’s honour’, a typically German honour one might view with considerable scepticism: the Meistersinger finale was, after all, misused for political purposes.Running time 5 hours 25 minutes with two intervals, in German with Dutch and English surtitles.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk Marc Albrecht, Conductor David Alden, Director Thomas Johannes Mayer, Bass: Hans Sachs Alastair Miles, Bass: Pogner Pascal Pittie, Tenor: Kunz Vogelgesang Mattijs van de Woerd, Baritone: Konrad Nachtigall Adrian Eröd, Baritone: Sixtus Beckmesser Thomas Oliemans, Baritone: Fritz Kothner Brian Galliford, Tenor: Balthasar Zorn Roberto Saccà, Tenor: Walther von Stolzing Ana Maria Martinez, Soprano: Eva Sarah Castle, Mezzo-soprano: Magdalene Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest Koor van De Nederlandse Opera Marcel Beekman, Tenor: Ulrich Eisslinger | ||

| Bimhuis, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 3, Amsterdam, Netherlands Thursday 20-Jun-13 08:30pm The Gloaming Early in 2011, by way of experiment, they met for a jamming session in the studio. At the end of that same year, the Irish Times hailed them as the new supergroup of Irish Music. Now, 18 months later, the Gloaming make their Dutch debut at the Holland Festival. Their instant success does not come as such a surprise though when you consider that all members of the band are seasoned recording artists in Irish music, some having worked with such names as Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne and Yoko Ono. With The Gloaming they are breaking new ground, stretching the boundaries of Irish folk music. Their performances are virtuoso yet subtle, powerful yet controlled, with beautiful melodies and, most of all, revelling in the sheer joy of music!

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Friday 21-Jun-13 08:30pm Licht op de langste dag On the longest day of the year, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic take their last bow – with an optimistic gesture. Supported by Visual Kitchen’s video and lighting design, four compositions on the theme of ‘light’ are performed. Two of these are brand new, an emphatic statement by the orchestra to leave something behind for the future. Dutch composer Matijs de Roo, a finalist at last year’s Toonzetters competition, has created a punchy and fast moving orchestral work; the French composer Pascal Dusapin (previously at the festival with Passion and Medea) has written a violin concerto titled Aufgang, which is performed by Renaud Capuçon. The orchestra will also play the sprightly Lumen II by Régis Campo and L’heure bleue by the Japanese composer Misato Mochizuki, a musical interpretation of the ‘blue hour’ of twilight.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:30pm Mahlerlieder East-Tyrolean outfit Franui make Mahler sound like never before. With their unusual, brass-dominated instrumentation this ‘Musicabanda’ from the village of Innervillgraten developed their unique sound by combining folk with classical music and jazz. Mahler’s late romantic songs undergo a fascinating metamorphosis, taking them back to their folk roots. The songs are interspersed with readings from Robert Walsers Kleine Dichtungen. The result is stunning: songs which through their sparse instrumentation sound heart-wrenchingly poignant, close harmonies of a touching honesty and gentle winds and brass through which the magnificent musical genius of the master resounds. A must for anyone who loves Mahler, and for those who weren’t aware of it yet.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Monday 24-Jun-13 08:30pm Brooklyn Babylon - Big band music from the heart of Brooklyn, New York At the dawn of the 20th century, Brooklyn is being targeted by real estate developers with plans to build the world’s highest tower right in the centre of the New York borough. When master carpenter Lev is commissioned to construct a carrousel to crown the skyscraper, he finds himself torn between his ambition and his loyalty to the community.
Brooklyn Babylon is an urban fable which unfolds wordlessly. The performance combines the haunting animations and live painting by graphic and comic artist Danijel Zezelj with the exciting, cosmopolitan polyphony of Secret Society, an 18-piece bigband led by Darcy James Argue – regarded as one of the great North American jazz musicians of the new generation.

Forty girls and young women from the world famous Vocal Theatre Carmina Slovenica aged between 10 and 20 constantly sway between childish innocence and the unpredictability of adolescence. | Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, Waterlooplein 22, Amsterdam, Netherlands Wednesday 3-Jul-13 07:30pm Thomas Mann’s novella Der Tod in Venedig was the inspiration for Britten’s last opera. Gustav Aschenbach, an aging author, is increasingly tormented by artistic self-doubt. He travels to Venice. The god Dionysus appears to him in six different guises, now benignly seductive, now confrontational and combative, accompanying Aschenbach towards death. In Venice the author comes face to face with the personification of beauty: the Polish youth Tadzio, for whom he feels a strong attraction. Here Britten reveals, with uncommon openness, the personal struggles of the social outsider. In the musical accompaniment, Britten uses the orchestra to support the realistic storyline, while exotic gamelan instruments depict Tadzio’s beauty. The youth, incidentally, remains mute throughout, and Aschenbach’s monologues are accompanied by a single piano. The composer’s conclusion is that beauty and perfection inevitably go hand and hand with loss and ruination.
