Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in London Sir Andrew Davis conducts a concert celebrating the exact 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, showcasing the British Wagner tradition and featuring one of the composer’s finest achievements. The Walküren (or Valkyries) of the title are an army of maidens who ride through the air on horseback. We see twin brother and sister, Siegmund and Sieglinde, fall in love, thereby committing both adultery and (unwittingly) incest. The former is subsequently killed by Wotan, although Brünnhilde (Wotan's warrior Valkyrie daughter) saves Sieglinde in the nick of time. The opera reaches a blazing climax during the unforgettable Third Act, when Brünnhilde is punished by Wotan, who surrounds her with a ring of fire that can only be crossed by a fearless hero destined to be none other than Sieglinde's eventual son, Siegfried. This concert also launches Wagner 200, a wideranging, London-based festival to celebrate the bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth, featuring events from May to November 2013 in association with leading venues and producers. It is the culmination of a day of activity at Southbank Centre, including pop up open-air performances on the riverside terraces and balconies featuring young singers and performers. Following acclaimed productions of Ghosts for ROH2, as well as Wuthering Heights and Clara elsewhere, the company returns to the Linbury Studio Theatre with Marston’s latest full-evening work. The inspiration for Witch-hunt is the true story of Anna Göldi, a servant brutally tortured and executed in Switzerland in 1782 for attempted murder, amid allegations of witchcraft. Witch-hunt is set to a collage of Baroque music and uses multi-layered choreography and text to investigate themes of guilt, innocence and the excavation of memories.

After performing Zombie Aporia at the Lilian Baylis Studio in 2012, he returns this spring with his latest work, Gaze is a Gap is a Ghost, co-commissioned by Sadler’s Wells.Combining video and live dance, Gaze is a Gap is a Ghost looks at the relationship between the human body and technology, the real and the virtual. Through pre-recorded video footage, the audience is given imaginative access to the visual perspectives of three dancers, as they perform live on stage in unison with their past. Daniel Linehan has been greeted with critical praise both in America and Europe since he presented his first work in 2004. Following acclaimed productions of Ghosts for ROH2, as well as Wuthering Heights and Clara elsewhere, the company returns to the Linbury Studio Theatre with Marston’s latest full-evening work. The inspiration for Witch-hunt is the true story of Anna Göldi, a servant brutally tortured and executed in Switzerland in 1782 for attempted murder, amid allegations of witchcraft. Witch-hunt is set to a collage of Baroque music and uses multi-layered choreography and text to investigate themes of guilt, innocence and the excavation of memories.

One of the world’s most recognised and widely performed operas, it focuses on two central relationships: that of the poet Rodolfo, who falls in love with the pretty but consumptive seamstress Mimì; and the painter Marcello, who has a glamorous and popular on-off mistress, Musetta. Jonathan Miller’s production for ENO has quickly become a company classic and here receives its second revival since its 2009 premiere. Inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of the Paris Left Bank in the 1930s, Miller modernises the original bohemian setting to evoke the stark poverty of the day, creating a highly effective contemporary resonance, citing the film Withnail and I as an inspiration.
