Hafiz’s poetry inspired Goethe to create the ‘West-Östlicher Divan’ – a collection of love poems, epigrams and drinking songs. Goethe’s verses in turn inspired composers such as Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn, while poems of Hafiz were set to music by Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss. Join us as we explore Europe’s century-long love affair with the Orient through poetry, painting and song. Ravel, Maurice (1875-1937), Shéhérazade (excerpts)

| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in London Sir Andrew Davis conducts a concert celebrating the exact 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, showcasing the British Wagner tradition and featuring one of the composer’s finest achievements. The Walküren (or Valkyries) of the title are an army of maidens who ride through the air on horseback. We see twin brother and sister, Siegmund and Sieglinde, fall in love, thereby committing both adultery and (unwittingly) incest. The former is subsequently killed by Wotan, although Brünnhilde (Wotan's warrior Valkyrie daughter) saves Sieglinde in the nick of time. The opera reaches a blazing climax during the unforgettable Third Act, when Brünnhilde is punished by Wotan, who surrounds her with a ring of fire that can only be crossed by a fearless hero destined to be none other than Sieglinde's eventual son, Siegfried. This concert also launches Wagner 200, a wideranging, London-based festival to celebrate the bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth, featuring events from May to November 2013 in association with leading venues and producers. It is the culmination of a day of activity at Southbank Centre, including pop up open-air performances on the riverside terraces and balconies featuring young singers and performers. Semi-staged performance in German with English surtitles Sir Andrew Davis, Conductor David Edwards, Stage Director Giselle Allen, Soprano Susan Bullock, Soprano James Rutherford, Bass Katherine Broderick, Soprano Elaine McKrill, Soprano Kimberly Myers, Soprano Jennifer Johnston, Mezzo-soprano Miriam Sharrad, Mezzo-soprano Antonia Sotgiu, Mezzo-soprano Harriet Williams, Mezzo-soprano Julianne Young, Mezzo-soprano Philharmonia Orchestra | ||

| Sadler's Wells: Peacock Theatre, London, Portugal Street, Holborn, London WC2 2HT, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm ZooNation Dance Company — Some Like It Hip Hop ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop has been a runaway success since it hit the Peacock Theatre in 2011, wowing audiences and prompting widespread critical praise with five-star reviews and standing ovations. After a second successful run and celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary at Sadler’s Wells last year, Some Like It Hip Hop returns to the Peacock Theatre to kick-start the summer. Fast becoming a modern classic, Some Like It Hip Hop unites truly sensational dancing and a typically clever and engrossing storyline with infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre. Directed by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, Some Like It Hip Hop also features a ground-shaking original soundtrack, live singing and some of the UK’s top hip hop dance talent. | ||

| Royal Opera House: Linbury Studio Theatre, London, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:45pm Bern:Ballett, directed by Cathy Marston (ex-Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House), is known for its technical prowess, stylistic versatility and physical storytelling. Following acclaimed productions of Ghosts for ROH2, as well as Wuthering Heights and Clara elsewhere, the company returns to the Linbury Studio Theatre with Marston’s latest full-evening work. The inspiration for Witch-hunt is the true story of Anna Göldi, a servant brutally tortured and executed in Switzerland in 1782 for attempted murder, amid allegations of witchcraft. Witch-hunt is set to a collage of Baroque music and uses multi-layered choreography and text to investigate themes of guilt, innocence and the excavation of memories. | ||

| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Wednesday 22-May-13 08:00pm Robertson leads Ravel and Gershwin Ravel, who heard jazz in Harlem with Gershwin, was dumbfounded by the dazzling Rhapsody in Blue, which Gershwin played at a birthday party for the French composer. When Gershwin asked to study with him, Ravel said "It is better to write good Gershwin than bad Ravel." The jazz-influenced Concerto for the Left Hand was written for a pianist grievously injured during the First World War. The dark undertones of La Valse, an homage to Viennese waltz, suggest a furious farewell to gentility in post-war Europe. Elliott Carter's powerful Variations for Orchestra, another 20th-century masterwork, opens the program. | ||

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 22-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: Solo Bach Stradivarius etc When our Artistic Director and Founder Denis Brott found the cello he wanted to perform on for the rest of his life, there was only one problem. He couldn’t afford it! This isn’t news in the music world as very few can afford a Stradivarius or, as Denis wanted, a 1706 Tecchler! With a few close friends, especially William Turner and the Canada Council’s Gilles Lefebvre, he helped create what would soon become a revolutionary institution, the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank. Their first instrument was Denis’s prized Tecchler.
Today the Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been heard in performance on the same stage at the same time. Until now! For the first time in the history of the Canada Council, we are proud to present 16 winners of the 2012 competition. This concert features each performer in a solo work by Bach. An historic event!Ariel Barnes, Cello Boson Mo, Violin Jonathan Chan, Violin Véronique Mathieu, Violin Arnold Choi, Cello Emily Westell, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Emmanuel Vukovich, Violin Rachel Desoer, Cello Se-Doo Park, Cello Matilda Kaul, Violin Carissa Klopoushak, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Nikki Chooi, Violin Timothy Chooi, Violin

Through pre-recorded video footage, the audience is given imaginative access to the visual perspectives of three dancers, as they perform live on stage in unison with their past. Daniel Linehan has been greeted with critical praise both in America and Europe since he presented his first work in 2004. He is currently a Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate, Associate Artist at deSingel, Antwerp, and Artist in Residence at L’Opéra de Lille.
