| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 23-Nov-13 06:00pm Papageno wants Papagena - Tamino his Pamina. But the pathway to love is not a simple one! Everyone has to undergo difficult trials. They even have to decide against murder and suicide, and do without food and drink and sometimes even without speech and song. The things that help them survive danger are a flute and a set of magic bells. The most world-renowned opera in a classically beautiful production, the legacy of stage director August Everding. The snake still breathes "real" fire, the Queen of the Night is still really a "star-flaming" monarch. The stage portrait (by Jürgen Rose) is wondrous fair. The magic of this opera really works here.

| Deutsche Oper, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 35, Berlin, Germany Saturday 23-Nov-13 07:30pm In Italian with German surtitles.
"From a purely theatrical point of view I consider "Rigoletto" to be the best story that I've set to music so far […]. It has really powerful scenes, temperament, pathos, a lot of variety." (Verdi to Antonio Somma, 22.4.1853) In listing the attributes of his 1851 melodrama, adapted from Victor Hugo's hit play "Le roi s'amuse", Verdi is also describing the challenges that any production of this opera must rise to. RIGOLETTO is a masterpiece whose charm lies precisely in the confrontation between psychological portraiture and the unlikely turns of a fantastical tale, a tale that is half tragedy, half romantic horror story. For better or worse, despite his grotesque physique, the hunchbacked jester-hero has to get his audience laughing. His daughter Gilda seems angelic by contrast - and yet human through and through in her unconditional love and self-sacrifice. This blend of realism and the fantastic makes the RIGOLETTO material a worthy challenge for the great directors. Following on from Hans Neuenfels' successful 20-year run with the work at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Jan Bosse is now grasping the nettle. Since turning to musical theatre in recent years [ORFEO, LA CALISTO] the feted theatre director now delivers not only his first Verdi but also his first work for a Berlin opera house. | Northcott Theatre, Exeter, Exeter EX4 4QB, United Kingdom Saturday 23-Nov-13 07:30pm Handel: Agrippina Handel’s three year visit to Italy culminated in the premiere of his opera Agrippina in Venice in 1709. Composing at speed to a scandalously witty and ironic libretto by a Cardinal, Vincenzo Grimani, Handel drew on his experience of the Italian style, plundering his catalogue of cantatas written for the intelligentsia of Rome and producing a youthful masterpiece of dazzling invention and virtuosity.
Widely regarded as Handel’s first operatic masterpiece, Agrippina stands out for the quality of its music, full of freshness and musical invention. Using many of the same characters as Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea, the opera is in fact a prequel, as Agrippina, wife to the Emperor Claudius, schemes and manipulates to secure the succession to the imperial throne for her son, Nero.
ETO’s new production is conducted by Handel specialist Jonathan Peter Kenny; the cast includes Gillian Webster as the eponymous heroine, Andrew Slater as Claudius and Jake Arditti as Nero.
New production, sung in English

And there will be close shaves a-plenty when Figaro helps the lovestruck Count Almaviva abduct his sweetheart Rosina from her nasty guardian Don Bartolo in this hilarious opera buffa, our hair-raising contribution to the month of ‘Movember’. The Barber of Seville combines knockabout humour with music of great virtuosity and brilliance, from its cheeky overture to showstopping arias including ‘Largo al factotum’ and ‘Una voce poco fa’. I would have happily seen it five more times." For more than a decade, So Percussion has redefined the modern percussion ensemble as a flexible, omnivorous entity, pushing its voice to the forefront of American musical culture.
