| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Thursday 21-Nov-13 05:00pm The daughter of the King of the Spirits has been floating in an in-between state since the human Emperor conquered her: She is neither a spirit nor a human. A woman without a shadow – which means a woman who is infertile. A threat hangs over the Empress and Emperor like a punishment for a great guilt: If she does not become fully human, he will turn to stone. Her panic-stricken search for a shadow, accompanied by her scheming nurse, takes the Empress to a woman who refuses her husband's advances. She is prepared to sell her shadow for the seductive promise of eternal youth. However, the prospect of the transaction does not make the Empress happy.
Inspired by Oriental fairy-tales and with an admiring glance at Mozart's Zauberflöte, the successful partnership of Strauss and Hofmannsthal created a puzzling, massive work heavy with symbolism and powerful sounds which constantly demands interpretation: is it wallowing in magical worlds whilst the old era is destroyed in the First World War? The pathway of trials taken by two couples on which the women overcome their own natures through subjecting themselves to the merciless law of renewal and decay? A study of the female psyche shortly after Freud's postulation of sexual neuroses? Or perhaps the spiritual voyage of a woman through her fears and guilt feelings at the end of which everyone comes together again on the threshold of the eternal father. | Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 21-Nov-13 07:00pm Leonce and Lena Leonce und Lena Music by Strauss II, Johann (1825-1899) / Zimmermann, Bernd Alois (1918-1970) / Donner, Martin / Schnittke, Alfred (1934-1998) Choreography by Christian Spuck Running time 1 hour 50 mins. Tickets 169 - 20CHF.
Christian Spuck has long been fascinated by the works of the German playwright Georg Büchner, whose work stands between German Romanticism and the emerging Modern Age. Taking a coolly analytical view, the author performed autopsies of the human soul, as it were, and as the poet Durs Grünbein put it, “registered the fissures that pass through the individual at an early stage, and certainly not coldly.” From 1836, Georg Büchner lectured in medicine in Zurich, and died here at the age of only 23. Christian Spuck created the full-length narrative ballet Leonce and Lena for the Aalto Ballet Essen in 2008.
The royal children Leonce and Lena have been betrothed without knowing one another. Both decide to escape the wedding. Leonce, who is tormented by boredom, intends to go to Italy with his companion Valerio and live there in indolence; Lena is persuaded to escape by her governess. The two encounter one another en route – and fall in love. Ignorant of one another’s identity, they appear masked at the court of Leonce’s father and are married.
Christian Spuck transforms Büchner’s subtly sarcastic comedy into a high-spirited, fast-paced and imaginative farce of automata, at the same time providing the danced caricature of the small German state. The airy, at times grotesque pieces of the king of waltz, Johann Strauss, inspire the tragicomic story and underline its burlesque elements, as do the modern sounds of Alfred Schnittke and Bernd Alois Zimmermann.

And there will be close shaves a-plenty when Figaro helps the lovestruck Count Almaviva abduct his sweetheart Rosina from her nasty guardian Don Bartolo in this hilarious opera buffa, our hair-raising contribution to the month of ‘Movember’. The Barber of Seville combines knockabout humour with music of great virtuosity and brilliance, from its cheeky overture to showstopping arias including ‘Largo al factotum’ and ‘Una voce poco fa’. Following her warm-hearted and witty stagings of L’elisir d’amore and Die Entführung aus dem Serail for CTO and UCT, Christine Crouse helms a whimsical new production of this sparkling, with Kamal Khan conducting the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 21-Nov-13 07:30pm Great Britten Fresh, bold, and pulsing with emotion, Benjamin Britten’s music swept through post-war Britain like a blast of sea air. On the eve of his centenary, Vasily Petrenko, the Orchestra and the Choir present an anniversary tribute ranging from the volcanic Sinfonia da Requiem, through the atmospheric Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, to the joyous Hymn to St Cecilia.
Making her Liverpool debut, Vilde Frang joins the salute in the brooding wartime Violin Concerto – and to top it all off, we revel in the energy, colour and sheer joy of Britten’s exuberant The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, which was given its concert premiere by the Orchestra in 1946 under Malcolm Sargent. Share the fun as we say “Happy Birthday, Ben!”Image credit: Mark McNulty

| Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Edvard Griegs plass 1, Bergen 5015, Norway Thursday 21-Nov-13 07:30pm Mozart's Requiem After Bach’s musikal benediction, we are left with music for thought: How can we gain a deeper understandingo f life and death on earth? Mozart, of course, felt confident to give an answer with his heavenly, redemptive Requiem. Concertmaster David Stewart makes a meaningful contribution to the discussion as soloist in Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre, composed in Germany in the dark beginnings of WWII. Dona nobis pacem. «Musicianship is, to be sure, Mr. Suzuki’s greatest strength…a subtle ear for color, a keen sense of harmonic direction, and an ability to make phrases breathe and rhythms live».
