| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 8-Nov-13 07:00pm Rusalka feels trapped in a world from which there is no escape. She is ready to put her immortality on the line in return for a human soul, so she can gain the love of a handsome prince. But she must pay for it with her voice. Muted and liberated from her dark world, she is forced to watch as the prince rejects her in favor of a foreign princess – dooming them both. She cannot live, she cannot die, yet nevertheless at the end, she helps the prince find his death with a “rescuing” kiss.
In their opera Rusalka, which premièred in 1901, Antonin Dvořák and his librettist Jaroslav Kvapil mixed the Slavic myth of the undead vengeful woman from the water with such storybook characters as Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué’s Undine and Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid. The fascinating musical worlds, the lyrical and highly dramatic moments came together to make Rusalka one of the most successful Czech operas ever written. Sung in Czech with German surtitles Tomas Hanus, Conductor Martin Kusej, Director Martin Zehetgruber, Set Designer Heike Grötzinger, Mezzo-soprano: Foreign Princess Kristine Opolais, Soprano: Rusalka Helena Zubanovich, Mezzo-soprano: Jezibaba, the Witch Yulia Sokolik, Mezzo-soprano: Kitchen Boy Ulrich Ress, Tenor: Gamekeeper Dmytro Popov, Tenor: Prince Alina Buratti, Soprano: The Hunter Georg Zeppenfeld, Bass: Vodnik, the water goblin

| Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Edvard Griegs plass 1, Bergen 5015, Norway Friday 8-Nov-13 07:00pm 2013 and 2014 bring two critical anniversaries to Norway. This year, 2013, designated the Year of the Woman, leads to the 200th anniversary celebrations of Norwegian independence in 2014, and the fearless constitution which underpinned the nation´s commitment to freedom and democracy. To perform Beethoven´s Fidelio, then, is to make a statement which brings together the composer´s own passionate humanity and will for individual freedom with our nation´s own aspirations; and, of course, to recognize his creation of an iconic female role: Leonore – activist, feminist, wife and heroine. With the great young Lithuanian director Oskaras Korsunovas and a fine international cast, Fidelio makes a critical statement at a time of national reflection and celebration.
Duration: 2 hours 50 minutes. Introduction by Gunnar Danbolt in the Grieg Hall foyer one hour before the performance. Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra Andrew Litton, Conductor Oskaras Korsunovas, Stage Director Rachel Nicholls, Soprano: Leonore Trine Wilsberg Lund, Soprano: Marzelline In-Sung Sim, Bass: Rocco Thorbjorn Gulbrandsoy, Tenor: Jaquino Gianpiero Ruggeri, Bass: Don Fernando Daniel Kirch, Tenor: Florestan Dmitry Lavrov, Bass-baritone: Don Pizarro KorVest Bergen Philharmonic Choir Håkon Matti Skrede, Choirmaster

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 8-Nov-13 07:30pm Barbican Britten: Bostridge sings Our Hunting Fathers Benjamin Britten arrived in north America in 1939 – talented, idealistic and hungry for success. One of his first creations was the fanfare Young Apollo, inspired by Keats’s ‘new dazzling sun-god, quivering with radiant vitality’, a work of consistent and almost overwhelming brilliance. Young rising star pianist and 2010 BBC Young Musician of the Year Lara Melda performs the solo sections this evening. At the other end of his life Britten became preoccupied with the recollection of times lost. His Suite on English Folk Tunes is a touching act of homage to both the country he felt so rooted to and the tradition of folksong to which he owed so much. Guardian of Britten’s very distinct vocal tradition Ian Bostridge sings the composer’s savage view of man’s inhumanity to man, the visceral song cycle Our Hunting Fathers.
Tickets: £10-35 Purcell, Henry (1659-1695), Chacony in G minor, Z807 (arr. Britten)
