Violetta Valery is kept in luxury by her admirer Baron Douphol. Seemingly recovered from a serious illness, she hosts a glittering party at which she meets and falls in love with Alfredo Germont. The world in which Violetta lives cannot countenance such a love affair and so she abandons her old existence and seeks happiness with Alfredo in the countryside. Soon, however, Alfredo's father Giorgio beseeches Violetta to end the relationship, fearing that Violetta's dubious reputation will jeopardise the wedding of Alfredo's younger sister. In despair, Violetta concedes and writes a farewell letter to Alfredo. At a ball given by her friend Flora Alfredo and Violetta clash: Violetta has taken it upon herself to convince Alfredo that she is in love with Baron Douphol. Alfredo has won a large sum of money at the gambling tables. Overcome by jealousy, he hurls his winnings at Violetta's feet, publicly declaring this to be the "fee" for her "favours". One month later, with Paris in the grip of carnival fever, Violetta is at death's door, having suffered a relapse. Now that his father has revealed the true reasons for her actions, Alfredo hurries back. Violetta forgives Alfredo for his conduct, releases him and dies. La Traviata was Verdi's only opera to be set among the Parisian middle classes of the day. It is based on the acclaimed novel The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils, which is a critical portrayal of the Parisian demi-monde and charts the story of Marie Duplessis, a noble courtesan who died from consumption in 1847 at the age of 23. While Dumas paid considerable attention to social networks and relationships, Verdi and his librettist Francesco Maria Piave focused entirely on the conflict between Violetta, Alfredo and his father Giorgio. Their drama concerns itself only with internal conflicts and focuses on the three phases in the fortunes of Violetta Valery - love, renunciation and death. By presenting Violetta's tribulations in the form of a retrospective narrative Götz Friedrich has given his tragedy the atmosphere of a requiem. No sooner has the opera begun than we see the protagonist on her deathbed, surrounded by the dark vastness of the stage, which resembles a gigantic tomb. As the ball begins Violetta, now in ballroom attire, rises from the bed, which has become a divan. Suddenly the doors burst open and in pours the frolicking Parisian crowd, intent on its frivolous entertainment. The flashback begins. Shunning sentimentality and trivial frankness, Friedrich's production reaches deep into the characters, laying bare the inner drama and bringing the gloom and fatalism of the piece to the fore. | Staatsoper at Schiller Theater, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 110, 10625 Berlin, Germany Sunday 20-Oct-13 06:00pm Caravaggio Music by Moretti, Bruno (b. 1960)/Monteverdi, Claudio (1567-1643) Choreography by Mauro Bigonzetti Caravaggio, born Michelangelo Merisi, has entered history due to his paintings of dramatic intensity. Caravaggio used to venture the threshold beyond the pale throughout his life. He was seen for admiration of his work and harsh opposition towards his extraordinary realism in painting human beings. Due to his passionate personality, he encountered more than several conflicts with people around him, sponsors, and the law. One of his foremost artistic twists was the extreme contrast between brightness and darkness, light and shadow.
Mauro Bigonzetti is one of the leading choreographers of the Italian ballet which freed itself from the predominance of mainly classical opera companies in the 80’s. He created his choreographies mainly for the Aterballetto in Reggio Emilia that helped him to fame and worldwide attention. “When I think of Caravaggio, I think of the artist and the human being at the same time. These are the two sides of the human existence that interest me in particular. The relations of these two worlds are the inspiration for this work: the inner world on the one hand – and how it evolves artistically on the other.” Mauro Bigonzetti has developed the piece CARAVAGGIO in collaboration with the Staatsballett Berlin. | National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 20-Oct-13 07:00pm L'enfant et les sortilèges, Der Zwerg (The Dwarf) In the first opera: the child who stubbornly refuses to do his homework and spitefully trashes his room suddenly watches objects come to life, inimically turned against him because of his hostility toward them. The furniture dances, the fire in the fireplace chases the child around, the numbers from his arithmetic book swirl about. Not until the child lovingly bandages the wounds of an injured squirrel on the lawn do the objects forgive him.
In the second: a dwarf looks forward to being allowed to congratulate the princess personally on her birthday, not suspecting that his function is simply to display his ugliness for the amusement of the party guests. Until now, he had never seen himself in the mirror, which is why he was captivated by his love for the princess. As he finally catches a glimpse of his mirror image, he suddenly becomes aware of the dirty trick that was played on him and sinks down dead. Sidonie Gabrielle Colette and Oscar Wilde wrote two totally different stories, both of which reveal how brutally people can treat one another. In Maurice Ravel’s score, jazz, operetta tunes and exotic themes blend together to form an enchanting fantasy world. The Viennese composer Alexander Zemlinsky had a close personal and artistic connection with Gustav Mahler, to whom he ultimately lost his lover Alma Schindler, who later described him as a “short, ugly gnome.” Sung in French and German with German surtitles Image credit: © Wilfried Hösl Martyn Brabbins, Conductor Grzegorz Jarzyna, Director Magdalena Maria Maciejewska, Set Designer Mélody Louledjian, Soprano: Fire Eri Nakamura, Soprano: Mouse Mélody Louledjian, Soprano: Nightingale Iulia Maria Dan, Soprano: Owl Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Soprano: Princess Eri Nakamura, Soprano: Shepherdess Yulia Sokolik, Mezzo-soprano: Cat (female) Okka von der Damerau, Mezzo-soprano: China Cup/Mezzo-soprano: Mother Laura Tatulescu, Soprano: The Child Kevin Conners, Tenor: Wedgwood teapot Christian Rieger, Bass: Tree Jennifer Borghi, Mezzo-soprano: Clock Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Soprano: Donna Clara Irmgard Vilsmaier, Soprano: Ghita John Daszak, Tenor: Dwarf Paul Gay, Bass-baritone: Don Estoban | ||

| Carnegie Hall, Zankel Hall, New York City, NY, New York City, NY, United States Sunday 20-Oct-13 07:30pm Ian Bostridge Iestyn Davies Joshua Hopkins Julius Drake. Britten: The Canticles Benjamin Britten is usually thought of as a musical dramatist on a large, operatic scale, but the instinct to capture psychological conflict in music burst through in his smaller musical forms as well. Written throughout his career, Britten's five Canticles chart the personal and creative relationship between the revered composer and his most important muse, tenor Peter Pears, drawing on varied subject matter from biblical stories to meditations on love and loss. Renowned tenor Ian Bostridge is joined by countertenor Iestyn Davies, baritone Joshua Hopkins, and pianist Julius Drake to perform the entire sequence of these mysterious pieces, as well as some of his realizations of songs by Henry Purcell, all in celebration of the centenary of Britten’s birth.
