![]() | ||
| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 21-Sep-13 07:30pm Even though John Cranko is South African, he counts as one of the most significant English choreographers of the 20th century. Furthermore, he is a central figure in German ballet history – after all, he contributed greatly to the fact that Germany returned to the forefront of the ballet world in the 1960s. In particular his version of Romeo and Juliet, created in 1962, directed the eyes of the ballet world back to the "Dance Country Germany" after it had been the catalyst of "Ausdruckstanz" and Modern Dance during the first third of the 20th century.
Cranko's Romeo and Juliet is told in the most clear and concise way, making explanations in the program book almost completely redundant. In his choreographic handwriting, each movement resembles an emotion. It is purely classical, but combines different styles and influences: from the near acrobatic virtuosity of the soviet ballet to the subtle elegance of the English style. This mixture is especially evident in his pas de deux between lovers. Ever since 1968, the ballet has been in the repertory of the Bavarian State Ballet. Every new generation of audiences and dancer alike is enchanted and devastated by the drama of this piece.

| 20th Century Theatre, London, 291 Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, London W11 2QA, United Kingdom Saturday 21-Sep-13 07:30pm Misia: The Muse of La Belle Époque Paris Misia Sert, née Godebska (1872-1950), was a muse and a patron to some of the most famous musicians, artists and writers from the Belle Époque 1890s through the 1930. According to Paul Morand, “She excited genius... through nothing but the vibration of her being.”
A talented musician in her own right, she studied piano under the composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). An enthusiastic performer of Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin, she was passionate about Debussy and Ravel. (Ravel dedicated his Le Cygne (The Swann) to her in 1906, and the symphonic poem La Valse (The Waltz) in 1920.) In the twentieth century, Misia’s musical tastes turned towards a new aesthetic represented by Satie, Stravinsky, Auric and Poulenc.
One of the most prolifically painted women of her time, Misia was portrayed by Vuillard, Bonnard, Vallotton, Renoir, Toulouse Lautrec and many others. Join us to as we present the music of Belle Époque and beyond; become a part of our encounter with Misia, a woman, who by virtue of her magnetic presence alongside artists of her time, became a muse and an arbiter of taste for several decades.

Christine Crouse and Michael Mitchell’s visually stunning staging of Puccini’s most heart-rending opera returns to the Opera House at Artscape.
“And the geisha will sing, as she used to do. And the happy song will end in a sob.”
East and West collide with tragic results in Puccini’s devastating opera about a trusting young Japanese bride and the callous American naval officer who weds and abandons her. Famous highlights including Butterfly’s aria ‘Un bel dì’, the joyous Flower Duet and the haunting Humming Chorus emerge from a score of consistent beauty and power, which goes straight for the emotional jugular and seldom fails to reduce even the hardest hearts to tears.
Christine Crouse’s “visually arresting” production, with Kabuki-inspired designs by Michael Mitchell, was a sell-out sensation at its first run in 2009.

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Saturday 21-Sep-13 08:00pm Colour Intensive Orchestral Painting In 2013 the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra are coming to Bonn with their chief conductor Jonathan Nott to give three concerts. The residency is devoted to a link-up between Beethoven symphonies and outstanding works of the twentieth century which have in their turn become classics in their own right. In the first concert, the rhythmic drive of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony will be juxtaposed with a modern, colour-intensive orchestral painting: the Third Symphony of Witold Lutosławski, in which the passages dependent on chance with different tempo layers create an unpredictable polyphony of sound.

After all, it implies that there is something there that has to be crossed over. That’s a dangerous idea." The Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto knows no borders between musical genres. Jazz, pop, folk and classical: "It’s all just music," he says. In Bonn he combines traditional music from his home country with modern jazz and electronic music – and displays roots which have gone on transforming themselves right up to the present, as if it were self-evident.
