| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 20-Sep-13 07:00pm Variety is a scarce commodity in the glum little village depicted by Gaetano Donizetti and his librettist Felice Romani – the only prospects beyond the stifling confines of this backwater seem to be the illusion of a hero’s life as a soldier, even if it might lead to an untimely death.
But what wonders a little bottle of Bordeaux can work! Shrinking violet Nemorino really turns up the volume courting Adina after just a couple of sips of the love elixir he purchased from miracle doctor, Dulcamara. And the potion promptly takes effect. Nemorino turns into a daredevil, preferring to die in battle rather than see his beloved Adina fall into the hands of strapping Sergeant Belcore. The ambitious Adina cannot resist the charms of the bold Nemorino – and even Dulcamara is flabbergasted at the energy and transformation released by his deception: this woebegone world of dolorous yearning is suddenly filled with color and fantasy.
And the listeners are left with the hope that this music might be able to transform them, too.

| Vår Frelsers kirke, Haugesund, Skåregata 145, Haugesund 5501, Norway Friday 20-Sep-13 07:00pm Eine kleine Nachtmusik An evening of fascinating contrasts: Mozart intended his elegant serenades as background music for aristocratic parties, while Haydn’s 92nd symphony was deemed grand enough to earn him an honorary doctorate at the University of Oxford. Bernt Sørensen’s music is imbued with ethereal effects and the use of extreme pianissimo dynamics, while Valen wrote in a more classical, unique serialist style. | Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Friday 20-Sep-13 07:30pm Puccini's Tosca Rome, 1800: as Revolution stalks the streets, two young artists find themselves fleeing for their lives. What price will they be prepared to pay for freedom – or for love? With its thrilling plot, unforgettable characters and soaring passion, Puccini’s Tosca is the ultimate romantic opera, and melodies like Vissi d’arte, Recondita armonia and E lucevan le stelle have made it one of the world’s best-loved operas for over a century.
Bryn Terfel has chosen his own Tosca and Cavaradossi with other roles coming from the Liverpool-Based European Opera Centre. Vasily Petrenko conducts, and Terfel reprises one of his supreme roles – the dangerously charismatic Baron Scarpia – in this dramatic concert performance. An unmissable climax to The Art of Bryn Terfel.Image credit: Brian Tarr

| Stadtmuseum Siegburg, Markt 46, 53721 Siegburg, Germany Friday 20-Sep-13 08:00pm Minds of their Own It doesn’t often happen in the classical-music scene that successful soloists get together to form an ensemble. The result of such a collaboration is all the more interesting, the more independent and self-confident each of the musicians is. One international ensemble of performers with minds of their own performed for the first time at the Konzerthaus in Dortmund in September 2012. It comprised Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Pekka Kuusisto, Lilli Maijala and Pieter Wispelwey. September 2013 will see the debut of this “laboratory quartet” of outstanding musicians at the Beethovenfest Bonn.

| Stiftskirche, Bonn, Kölnstraße 31, 53111 Bonn, Germany Friday 20-Sep-13 08:00pm "Beethoven, in Devotional Mood" Compared with, for example, Mozart or Haydn, Beethoven did not write much religious music: alongside the oratorio “Christ on the Mount of Olives” and the “Missa solemnis” also the rarely performed Mass in C major, composed in 1807. The absolute rarities include the Elegiac Song op. 118 and the Cantata on the Death of Joseph II WoO 87, whose texts reflect the literary taste of the time. The L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, reinforced by exquisite singers, invite listeners to rediscover the musical beauty of these little-known works, and to experience “Beethoven in devotional mood”.Image credit: © Marco Borggreve Works by Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827) | ||

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Friday 20-Sep-13 08:00pm From the Russian Soul The Ural Philharmonic Orchestra from Ekaterinburg bears impressive witness to the high quality of the Russian musical tradition. Since the lifting of the Iron Curtain, the orchestra, which was formed in 1936, has wowed concert audiences all over the world. In 1995 Dmitri Liss, previously the assistant to Dmitri Kitayenko at the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, became its chief conductor. In Bonn the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra will be presenting Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto with the Russian pianist Boris Berezovsky, the winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1990, and Tchaikovsky’s "throroughly subjective" Sixth Symphony.
