Dance, also referred to as la belle danse – comparable with belles lettres and beaux-arts – formed an international language understood throughout the world. In four scenes we travel from France to England and Germany, concluding with a Venetian carnival. Les Folies Françoises perform live on stage.

| Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH1 2EA, United Kingdom Wednesday 28-Aug-13 08:00pm Ensemble musikFabrik A concert of blazing energy, infectious rhythms and big sounds as Cologne-based contemporary music group Ensemble musikFabrik celebrates the sometimes outrageous music of US maverick Frank Zappa. Led from the drumkit by superstar percussionist Dirk Rothbrust, the ensemble explores connections between Zappa’s wild creations, from the vibrant funk of Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing? to the atmospheric t’Mershi Duween, and the classical music that he so admired. Ensemble musikFabrik also performs the remarkable Ionisation for 13 percussionists by Zappa’s lifelong hero Edgard Varèse, a celebration of the sounds of modern city life. John Cage’s classic Credo in Us, written in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, supplements the percussion ensemble with turntable and radioreceiver. Image credit: Klaus Rudolph | ||

In Italy a new expressive style arose that was to set the tone in the Baroque period. The nine singers and five instrumentalists of Currende pay tribute to the last generation of polyphonists in Germany and Austria, performing masterly music by Lassus, Le Febure, Utendal and Hassler. They were primarily active in the field of pure polyphony; however, they too embarked upon the new path of greater expressivity and direct emotional expression.
