Joseph Macerollo is one of the world’s greatest living accordionists, with an international reputation for both his skill with the instrument and the variety of his repertoire. His witty, live performances, whether in his native Canada or abroad, are audience favourites and his virtuosic recording, television, and film credits exceed those of almost any other accordionist on the planet. A former member of Canada’s famous Quartetto Gelato, this musician genuinely deserves the title, Mr. Accordian… and if you don’t know this before you meet him, you’ll definitely be saying it after you hear him play!

| MusicBarge, Stratford, ON, Stratford, ON, Canada Saturday 24-Aug-13 12:30pm Genticorum Over the past decade the trad Quebec group Genticorum (Pascal Gemme, Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand and Yann Falquet) has become a fixture on the international world, trad, folk and Celtic music circuit. The trio’s four albums met with critical acclaim in Canada, the United States and Great Britain, assuring the band a brilliant future. Known for its energy and its stage presence (and often mistaken for a larger ensemble), Genticorum has given more than 800 concerts in no fewer than 15 countries – and is showing no sign of slowing down: this is a band in high demand.
Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, the energetic and original traditional ‘power trio’ also incorporates the dynamism of today’s North American and European folk cultures in their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle and flute work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion and guitar and bass accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast. Their distinctive sound, sense of humour and stage presence make them a supreme crowd pleaser. Image credit: Catherine Aboumrad

The source of this influence is unmistakeable: Froberger studied in Rome with the other great master of 17th-century keyboard music, Girolamo Frescobaldi. In this recital Van Immerseel places Froberger alongside his much older, but similarly Catholic colleague: William Byrd, juxtaposing the Italian polyphonic tradition with the expressive music of the English virginalists.

All 3 Performances for $79 by calling 519.271.2101 or toll-free 1.866.288.4313 Mzansi Sings the Americas – Saturday, August 24 Anyone who heard this Choir in their first visit to Stratford in 2011 knows that popular songs from our own continent were part of the melodies that ignited our hearts two years ago. You can be sure that hits such as Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, Homeless from Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Graceland album, Circle of Life from Disney’s The Lion King, plus a certain international favourite or two by a famous son of Stratford - all these will all be programmed in this final concert. The Mzansi Youth Choir was established in July 2003 with the aim of affording talented, underprivileged teenagers and young adults (14-24 years) the opportunity to proficiently perform locally and abroad. The choir consists of 45 choristers from Soweto and other areas in and around Johannesburg. The word Mzansi means south in isiZulu and is also the township slang word for South Africa. The choir’s repertoire is an exciting assortment of South African music which incorporates elements of traditional music, pop and jazz. Ralf Schmitt is the dynamic conductor and artistic director who inspires and leads this exceptional choir through his passion for the music of South Africa and his expertise in the folk music of his native land. Ralf is a recognized choral music specialist and a composer, arranger, lecturer, adjudicator, conductor and author for music in films, on discs, on radio and in publications. In addition to having conducted the National Youth Choir of South Africa he has also conducted events featuring such international artists as Alicia Keys, the Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, John Legend and K’Naan at the FIFA 2010 Kick-Off Celebration and the World Cup Final concerts. Stratford Summer Music is delighted to welcome this extraordinary group of young Africans whose initial visit in 2011 was a highlight of that season, setting new records for attendance at their MusicBarge performances.

He no doubt suffered great humiliation living in exile as a guest of the French King Louis XIV; however, music may have brought him some solace. Le Jardin Secret plays the Italian music familiar to the Stuarts in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, as well as the newly composed French repertoire of the period. Campra, Visée, Charpentier and Carissimi thus join company in this concert.

More than 350 years after his death he was elevated to sainthood. Political opportunism was perhaps the greatest motivating factor behind his canonisation: the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa exploited his historical predecessor in order to bolster his own stature and claim direct lineage from the Roman emperors. Sequentia creates a trait d’union linking both these aspects of Charlemagne, juxtaposing early Latin songs from Charlemagne’s court with 12th-century masses.

The Baroque orchestra was a definite must for this year’s festival, since its namesake features so prominently in the programming. The concert is based on the concerto grosso, a genre that spread from Rome to the north. Corelli’s rarely heard Sinfonia in D minor will also be performed.

| Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Edinburgh EH8 9FT, United Kingdom Saturday 24-Aug-13 07:15pm Dido and Aeneas and Bluebeard's Castle Desire, obsession and doomed love: Oper Frankfurt’s striking double bill brings together two one-act operas separated by more than 200 years of musical history, yet united in their searing explorations of human relationships.Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is a poignant masterpiece of early English opera that features some of the composer’s most heartfelt music. After reluctantly falling in love with the warrior Aeneas as he travels home from the Trojan Wars, Dido is brutally rejected when he is later deceived into leaving her. Bartók’s hugely powerful opera Bluebeard’s Castle depicts the tragic Judith obsessively opening a series of mysterious doors in her recently betrothed’s castle to discover the fate of his former wives. In a sumptuous score, Bartók paints vivid musical pictures of the castle’s sinister rooms, while also conveying the psychological subtleties of his two protagonists. The daring, visually arresting productions by Australian director Barrie Kosky combine intimacy and grandeur, and conductor Constantinos Carydis leads an exceptional cast of acclaimed soloists. | Baxter Theatre Centre, Rondebosch, Cape Town, Baxter Theatre Main Rd, Cape Town 7701, South Africa Saturday 24-Aug-13 07:30pm Presented by Cape Town Opera in collaboration with the UCT Opera School at the Baxter Theatre.
CTO and the UCT Opera School continue their exploration of Mozart’s mature operas with a theatrically daring take on his thrilling Don Juan adaptation.
“640 Italians. 231 Germans. 100 French and 91 Turks. But in Spain – there are already 1003.”
With 2065 names in his little black book, Don Giovanni can lay fair claim to the title of the world’s greatest seducer. But one night in Seville, literature’s most famous sex addict goes too far – and must face supernatural retribution for his crimes.
Don Giovanni has inspired obsessive admiration ever since it was created – along with Hamlet and the sea, Flaubert believed it was one of “the three finest things God ever made” - and the greatest singers of every generation long to put their stamp on its memorable characters. Yet Mozart had a young cast in mind when he penned the opera – the first Giovanni was 21, and the first Donna Anna 24 – and Don Giovanni springs off the page with a visceral authenticity when performed by energetic twenty-somethings.
Kamal Khan and Matthew Wild return as conductor and director to create a new production of the opera, following their darkly illuminating Cosi fan tutte in 2012, “an entertaining production which unites sublime music with thought-provoking interpretation” (Cape Argus). “The Don propels himself through his last night on earth with manic abandon, compelling love, hate, lust and obsession from all who orbit around him,” says Wild. “No other opera explores sexual and romantic compulsion so arrestingly – themes we will foreground in a show that is young, raw and startling.”

Dufay may have composed his mass after returning to Cambrai, where he spent his final years, lauded as the most influential European composer of his day. In the mid-fifteenth century the theme of L’homme armé was strikingly common in mass settings: possibly a reference to the fall of Constantinople following the Turkish siege; a traumatic event for Western Europe. Quite the matter of life and data. Peter Gregson is equally at home collaborating with some of the most exciting musicians working today (including Gabriel Prokofiev, Daníel Bjarnason and Max Richter) as he is with world-leading technologists, ranging from the Media Lab at MIT, Microsoft Labs and his own Google-funded incubator, The Electric Creative Colab.
