| Cheltenham Ladies College: Parabola Arts Centre, Bayshill Road, Cheltenham GL50 3EP, United Kingdom Saturday 13-Jul-13 11:00am Worbey and Farrell To call Worbey and Farrell a comedy piano duo is only to tell half the story. Their shows are hilarious, but they're also fast-paced, captivating and illuminating (where else will you discoverhow a piano can sound like Doctor Who's TARDIS?). A unique, entertaining piano act, their revolutionary, seamlessly choreographed treatment of the traditional piano duet pushes the boundaries of the instrument using it to illuminate music of every style, from classical to popular, while you can see their dexterity up close when they project a video of their hands live onto the big screen. This is definitely a show for all ages that is sure to put a smile on your face and teach you some surprising piano facts along the way! | ||

| Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, Cheltenham GL52 3JE, United Kingdom Saturday 13-Jul-13 11:00am Mozart & Beethoven for Piano & Winds The London Conchord Ensemble is a collective of the highest calibre soloists and principals of orchestras such as the BBC Symphony and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Performances and recordings since their Wigmore Hall debut a decade ago have been widely praised for their precision, sophistication and spirit. Alongside the pair of classical Viennese works, their programme here features Barber’s wind quintet from the 1950s and Poulenc’s most substantial chamber work, a typically suave, melodic work finished just before the outbreak of World War Two.
Rumbustious and playful, Francis Poulenc is deemed a lesser figure among the greats of 20th-century music but it’s a mistake to underestimate him. His work is no mere froth; there’s a smoky, autumnal sadness to his harmonic writing, a lingering regret beneath the joie de vivre, particularly in the intimacy of his chamber music. The London Conchord Ensemble understand this completely, working their magic in the bittersweet sonatas…and romping through ensemble works large and small.

| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Saturday 13-Jul-13 11:00am Jim Hawkins dreams of one day being master of the seas and visiting far-off lands. Instead, he is forced to help his mother at the Golden Anchor tavern – day in, day out. When a guest dies, Jim finds a treasure map in his seaman’s chest – the treasure map of the late pirate Captain Flint. And Jim already finds himself embarking on the most exciting adventure of his life. An expedition to Treasure Island is organised, and Jim is allowed to sail on the Hispaniola together with Captain Smollett, Doctor Livesey, Baroness Trelawney, Lily and Scarlett. On the high seas, however, it transpires that Captain Flint’s former comrades have been hired to crew the ship, including the one-legged ship’s cook, Long John Silver. The pirates are also in search of treasure, and they succeed in snatching one half of the treasure map. Once they arrive on the island, a feverish search for the gold begins, during which the protagonists’ luck changes several times.
Treasure Island, by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, is a classic of the adventure genre and has kept generations of young readers on tenterhooks. The composer Frank Schwemmer and his librettist Michael Frowin – both already successful with their opera for children, Robin Hood – have allowed themselves to be gripped by Stevenson’s thrilling story, and have adapted it for the stage. Their full-length opera is suitable for all pirate lovers from the age of six.In German.Thomas Rösner, Conductor Nadja Loschky, Director Henrik Ahr, Set Designer Fabio Trümpy, Tenor: Jim Hawkins Oliver Widmer, Baritone: John Silver Ivana Rusko, Soprano: Lily Irène Friedli, Soprano: Baroness Trelawney Reinhard Mayr, Bass: Captain Smolett Martin Zysset, Tenor: Bill Bones / Ben Gunn

| Sadler's Wells, London, Rosebery Avenue,, London EC1R 4TN, United Kingdom Saturday 13-Jul-13 02:30pm Quimeras Legendary flamenco guitarist, composer, dramatist and producer Paco Peña returns to Sadler’s Wells with his latest narrative work Quimeras, directed by Southbank Centre artistic director Jude Kelly. Exploring the lure of travel and the dream of people everywhere of finding a better life - and the profound influence that the African continent has had on European culture - Quimeras tells the story of a group of Africans who have come to Spain in search of work. Over a career that spans more than four decades, Peña has expanded the possibilities of flamenco and changed perceptions of the art form by mining the richness of its traditions while continuing to be inspired by contemporary culture. With Quimeras, he draws on his own experience of living in Andalusia, a gateway to Europe for many north African immigrants. The result is a marriage of both traditional Spanish and African music and dance, creating a spectacle of virtuoso performances and intimate storytelling which was described as “breathtakingly beautiful” (Daily Telegraph). | ||

| Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Saturday 13-Jul-13 07:00pm The masterly music composed by Giuseppe Verdi for Shakespeare’s powerful drama, combined with the highly-acclaimed direction of Ralf Långbacka and the costumes and stage designs of Anneli Qveflander together create one of the most successful productions in the history of the Savonlinna Opera Festival. This Macbeth has also been frequently seen on other stages, both in guest performances by the Savonlinna Opera Festival and in rental productions. When lust for power spurs husband and wife to ever more dastardly deeds, an honourable nobleman and first-rate soldier can turn into a human monster who, to be on the safe side, stops at nothing to liquidate any who stand in his way, both friend and foe. This perspective, highlighted in Långbacka’s vision, makes the Savonlinna Macbeth a more human and more “ordinary” character than the one presented in many other productions. And hence so credible and moving. | Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Saturday 13-Jul-13 07:00pm The court of the Duke of Mantua is the scene of glittering festivities. However, the courtiers who enjoy themselves at these celebrations are morally reprobate. They no longer have any values and amuse themselves out of sheer boredom. Here, to enjoy oneself means to humiliate and demean others. The court jester, Rigoletto, is the most cynical of all. He wants to protect only his daughter Gilda from the corrupt world. He locks her away and forbids her everything. Despite this, the young woman goes her own way. She develops from a rebellious teenager into a mature, loving woman. Her longing for freedom and self-determination is stronger than her father’s oppressive authoritarianism, and her faith in love remains unshakeable, despite the hypocrisy of society. Like so many of Verdi’s figures, Gilda achieves what she failed to do in life only in death – to take the step towards freedom.
With Rigoletto, Giuseppe Verdi attained a new level in his musical and dramatic oeuvre. He composes the scenes and successive images in a highly precise manner, at times almost like a film editor. The score reveals a brilliant juxtaposition of psychological ambiguity and melodic directness. There are strong contrasts in atmosphere. Giuseppe Verdi wrote Rigoletto during the politically volatile post-revolutionary period around 1850. His decision to base his opera on Victor Hugo’s play, Le Roi s’amuse (The King amuses himself), was an extremely socio-critical choice. Rigoletto is one of the Italian composer’s most sinister operas.
Tatjana Gürbaca will stage the piece, which will be her début at Zurich Opera House. The German director is now one of the most prominent of her generation; this is also because she preserves a feminine view of the works she stages. The internationally sought-after Alexandra Kurzak will be performing Gilda, and Quinn Kelsey, who is considered a sensational discovery among Verdi baritones, will be singing Rigoletto. The experienced Verdi expert Fabio Luisi will be at the rostrum.

Needless to say, love triumphs across the board at the end – the badly guarded daughter gets her beloved Alain – neither her mother, the widow Simone, nor the rich farmer with his dolt of a son can prevent it. And the widow surprisingly gets a man as well.

| Sadler's Wells, London, Rosebery Avenue,, London EC1R 4TN, United Kingdom Saturday 13-Jul-13 07:30pm Quimeras Legendary flamenco guitarist, composer, dramatist and producer Paco Peña returns to Sadler’s Wells with his latest narrative work Quimeras, directed by Southbank Centre artistic director Jude Kelly. | ||

The Rilling sisters and Adorjan brothers continue that tradition as the Hohenstaufen Quartet, named for the Rilling family’s hilltop retreat. They offer the soaring melodies and sweet sentimentality of Mendelssohn’s Op. 44, No. 2 String Quartet, and Schubert’s epic Quartet No. 15, a spellbinding series of contrasts, expansions, and variations.

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 13-Jul-13 08:00pm Eve of "Der Ring des Nibelungen"
The unsullied enchantment of E-flat major harmonies in the initial bars of Das Rheingold doesn’t last very long. Instead, a world comes into being; a world that fifteen hours of music later will be unable to stave off its own downfall. In this world, nature is violated, and laws are ignored. Greed, power and malediction are the order of the day. Alberich steals the gold from the Rhine Maidens, enslaves his workers and revels in the sweet smell of world domination. Wotan claims it for himself and joins forces with Loge to make off with the ring, the gold and the magic helmet. His construction project is envisioned as the foundation of existence for his family of gods – his wife objects. He must part with the accursed ring as payment to the two giants. Seething with envy, one giant murders the other. The glow of the gods’ castle first gleams after the tempest, but Loge sees the castle already headed for ruin. The threads of the tale get tangled in this eve of the tetralogy, the water loses its sheen, and the clouds are shrouded in darkness.
New production.

None other than Richard Galliano — a star among the bandoneon virtuosos — will demonstrate how much rhythm and South American temperament this musical instrument holds. A friend of fellow musician Astor Piazzolla, Galliano will perform both in the Prelude and in the evening concert with the Tonkünstler, taking you on an exciting journey through Latin America.
