| Aldeburgh Box Office, 152 High Street, Aldeburgh IP15 5AQ, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 The Borough Punchdrunk Theatre Company and its artistic director Felix Barrett are pioneers in a highly individual form of theatre, focusing as much on audience members and the surroundings as the performers and the narrative. Lines between spaces, performer and spectator blur to create an unforgettable experience. This version sets the story somewhere between George Crabbe’s poem The Borough and Britten’s masterpiece, Peter Grimes. It will take audience members on individual theatrical journeys around Grimes’ town, following in his footsteps and hearing Britten’s score. Open air: Outdoors | ||

Are Carter’s snappy syncopations a transatlantic echo of Shostakovich’s irony-laden acerbic wit and Kurtág’s compact, expressive gestures laden with the same potency as the sparse opening fragments of Britten’s sonata, which marked the beginning of an inspired collaboration with Rostropovich? At the heart of it, the cello’s inimitable voice, forceful but tender, sighing, singing, whispering, lamenting…

| Concertgebouw: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands Saturday 8-Jun-13 01:30pm The Gospel according to the other Mary John Adams has proven in his past work that he is not one to shun big themes. Famous for being the composer who added depth to the minimal music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass by allowing romantic gestures and modern techniques, he has dealt with political issues such as terrorism, 9/11, the atomic bomb and the Los Angeles riots. Now Adams is taking the challenge to delve into the greatest story of Western history. He created a
modern passion, centring not on Jesus, but on Mary Magdalene. Through her eyes we witness the suffering of the world and the compassion of man. A poignant and captivating modern passion for our current dark times. Los Angeles première 31st May 2012.

After a second successful run and celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary at Sadler’s Wells last year, Some Like It Hip Hop returns to the Peacock Theatre to kick-start the summer. Fast becoming a modern classic, Some Like It Hip Hop unites truly sensational dancing and a typically clever and engrossing storyline with infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre. Directed by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, Some Like It Hip Hop also features a ground-shaking original soundtrack, live singing and some of the UK’s top hip hop dance talent.

| Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 04:00pm Angels in Blythburgh Jonathan Harvey’s choral music is distinguished by an often ecstatic lyricism and a serene spirituality, where the purity of the human voice contrasts with
startling vocal explorations stretching the possibilities of choral sound to its very boundaries. This is astonishing music of multi-layered intricacy that exerts
a direct emotional pull, alluding to other music and cultures, other centuries, yet speaking with one voice, seemingly timeless and yet recognisably of today.
The Latvian Radio Choir’s recent rapturously-received recording demonstrated their virtuosity and affinity with this music. Here they tellingly pair Harvey
with Tudor anthems – a set of celebratory hymns and psalms and devotional prayers that contain some of the highpoints of English sacred repertoire. ‘No British choir sings with the precision and vibrato-free purity of this brilliant group from Riga’ - The Independent

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 8-Jun-13 05:00pm Nine Rivers Marathon implementation of the magnum opus of the Scottish composer James Dillon, a unique experience.
Three of The Netherlands’ most outstanding ensembles join the virtuoso American percussionist and conductor Steven Schick for a marathon performance of Scottish composer James Dillon’s masterpiece Nine Rivers. This vast, ambitious work consists of nine parts for varying instrumentations, ranging from solo percussion and a cappella choir to strings and electronics. The piece focuses on the river as a metaphor for time and memory, while also playing games with the memory of the audience.
Dillon was inspired to write Nine Rivers by Rimbaud’s Le Bateau Ivre. Just as the boat in this famous poem crashes through the river towards the ocean, Dillon’s music moves from weightless hyperactivity through bleak horror to Wagnerian grandeur in a long, continuous, ever evolving ritual.
Tickets €30 - 22.50, students/CJP €17.50 all categories. Running time 6 hours including intervals. | New Palace Sanssouci: Palace Theatre, Potsdam, Sanssouci Park, Am Neuen Palais, 14469 Potsdam, Germany Saturday 8-Jun-13 05:00pm Sung in Danish with German supertitles Since he was Prince Henry’s Hofkapellmeister (court conductor) in Rheinsberg, Johann Abraham Peter Schulz was a highly esteemed person in Prussia’s musical scene. Having been appointed royal Kapellmeister (conductor) he moved to Copenhagen in 1787. His inspiring work and his achievements in terms of musically educating the people cannot be valued highly enough. As a "song man of the people" he wanted to speak to the people with an art that takes the art out of art. With his musical comedy "Peters Bryllup" (Peter’s Wedding) he succeeded to the extent that the Danes fully adopted his tunes as their own and the term "national" Danish music was used for the very first time. Thomas Thaarup’s scenes depicting the lives of simple farmers and seamen offer slices of realism despite the idyllic setting. Topics such as the trade in slaves and the abolishment of serfdom were quite explosive. At Palace Theatre Sanssouci L’ARTE DEL MONDO return the delightful piece to the stage for the first time ever as part of their "Opera from the world’s archives" season which was initiated by Bayer Kultur. Coproduction with L’ARTE DEL MONDO and Bayer Kultur, supported by the Capital City Potsdam, the State of Brandenburg, the Artfoundation NRW and the Ministry of Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia; in cooperation with Copenhagen Opera Festival

Eight decades on, Conor Mitchell’s new settings of new Mark Ravenhill lyrics capture and embellish the atmosphere of heady excitement, emotional anxiety and inevitable heartache of a blossoming love affair. Originally written for an actress, Britten’s cabaret songs are given new life by Jamie McDermott, charismatic vocalist of quirky and theatrical indie band, The Irrepressibles, His sultry falsetto brings new colour and poignancy to a radical re-imagining of Britten’s originals, sung alongside new Mitchell settings of song lyrics that Auden intended for Britten but were never used, and a brand new set of cabaret songs they’ve inspired.

After the comedy by Georg Büchner
Music by Johann Strauss, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Amilcare Ponchielli,
Alfred Schnittke and Martin Donner
Swiss première
Christian Spuck has long been fascinated by the works of the German playwright Georg Büchner, whose work stands between German Romanticism and the emerging Modern Age. Taking a coolly analytical view, the author performed autopsies of the human soul, as it were, and as the poet Durs Grünbein put it, “registered the fissures that pass through the individual at an early stage, and certainly not coldly.” From 1836, Georg Büchner lectured in medicine in Zurich, and died here at the age of only 23. Christian Spuck created the full-length narrative ballet Leonce and Lena for the Aalto Ballet Essen in 2008. Zurich Ballet will now perform the piece for the first time in Switzerland – only a few weeks before Büchner’s 200th birthday.
The royal children Leonce and Lena have been betrothed without knowing one another. Both decide to escape the wedding. Leonce, who is tormented by boredom, intends to go to Italy with his companion Valerio and live there in indolence; Lena is persuaded to escape by her governess. The two encounter one another en route – and fall in love. Ignorant of one another’s identity, they appear masked at the court of Leonce’s father and are married.
Christian Spuck transforms Büchner’s subtly sarcastic comedy into a high-spirited, fast-paced and imaginative farce of automata, at the same time providing the danced caricature of the small German state. The airy, at times grotesque pieces of the king of waltz, Johann Strauss, inspire the tragicomic story and underline its burlesque elements, as do the modern sounds of Alfred Schnittke and Bernd Alois Zimmermann.

| New Chambers Sanssouci: Ovid Gallery, Potsdam, Im Park Sanssouci, 14469, Potsdam, Germany Saturday 8-Jun-13 07:30pm Fascinating Hardanger The combination of archaic rawness and timeless, elementary power makes for a memorable experience when listening to a Hardanger violin. It has additional resonance chords like the viola d’amore and its flat chevalet allows for playing in chords much like the viola da gamba. Five virtuosic soloists become a fabulous ensemble, make the stories hidden in their old instruments resonate and conjure up worlds of sound in the listener’s ear that make the borders between old and new music miraculously permeable. In German Elisabeth Seitz’ instrument is, rather crudely referred to as "chopping board" yet when she plays it, a baroque gavotte suddenly sounds as if dreamed under the midnight sun.
