The Dutch pianist has played in all the world’s great concert halls, including Vienna’s Musikverein and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He’ll play with the Residentie Orkest/The Hague Philharmonic in Chopin’s First Piano Concerto, a masterwork that gives the pianist every opportunity to show off what he or she can do, just as Chopin himself did when he wowed Warsaw with the piece in 1830. The concert will close with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, one of the most beloved in the symphonic repertoire, conducted by a favourite with audiences, Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Handel based his work on the libretto by the famous poet Pietro Metastasio. In its first season Siroe was performed on 18 successive evenings, but it was never subsequently revived in Handel’s lifetime. The opera now receives its first performance in Göttingen with a top-rank cast performing under the musical direction of Laurence Cummings. In Immo Karaman, the Festival has won a young-generation stage director who has made a strong name for himself internationally for his much-noted productions. National Theatre, MunichLa Bayadère - Revival |
Bavarian State Ballet |
![]() | ||
| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 19-May-13 03:00pm La Bayadère - Revival La Bayadère was the first work in a series of successful reconstructions of 19th century repertory which has been – almost – completed in Munich. This splendid full-length gem of a true Russian classic by master choreographer Marius Petipa, focuses on the two characters of Nikija and Solor, caught in a complicated triangle relationship. Petipa stands for the great era of the Russian Imperial ballet at the Mariinsky Theater St. Petersburg. Most audiences today associate him with the famous and ever popular Tchaikovsky-ballets: The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake or Don Quixote with music by Ludwig Minkus.
Created in 1877, La Bayadère is a mixture of an exotic tale, a thriller and a celebration of virtuosity. At its center are the two lovers: the priestess, the Bayadère, Nikija and the soldier Solor. The ladder however is promised in marriage to Gamzatti, the daughter of the Radja, whilst the Great Brahman has fallen in love with his priestess Nikija. Nikija falls victim to murder by her rival and Solor dreams himself into the 'Kingdom of Shades' in order to be reunited with his love. What follows is one of the most famous, magnificent white acts in ballet history.
The Bavarian State Ballet has worked on this version, together with the French choreographer Patrice Bart and the Japanese stage- and costume designer Tomio Mohri. The heart of the piece, the 'Kingdom of Shades' act, the betrothal celebration scene with it ceremonious line filing dance and some elaborate pantomime scenes can be seen in its original version.
The final act, lost in Russia since the beginning of the century, is part a new creation, part reconstruction.Image credit: Wilfried Hösl

| Sadler's Wells: Peacock Theatre, London, Portugal Street, Holborn, London WC2 2HT, United Kingdom Sunday 19-May-13 04:00pm ZooNation Dance Company — Some Like It Hip Hop ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop has been a runaway success since it hit the Peacock Theatre in 2011, wowing audiences and prompting widespread critical praise with five-star reviews and standing ovations. After a second successful run and celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary at Sadler’s Wells last year, Some Like It Hip Hop returns to the Peacock Theatre to kick-start the summer. Fast becoming a modern classic, Some Like It Hip Hop unites truly sensational dancing and a typically clever and engrossing storyline with infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre. Directed by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, Some Like It Hip Hop also features a ground-shaking original soundtrack, live singing and some of the UK’s top hip hop dance talent. | ||
